The primary purpose of the Manager of Health Information Management is to provide the necessary management and direction to assure complete and accurate records are maintained for all patients in accordance with federal and state guidelines, as well as established policies and procedures, to assure that a complete medical records program is maintained. The Manager of Health Information Management is responsible to see that this information is available in a fashion conductive to improving the quality of patient care and the medical education process. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representatives of the knowledge, skill, and or/ability required. Education: The Manager of Medical Records must possess certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) and be registered with the AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). Must meet continuing education requirements for the position and for the registry with AHIMA.

Experience: Must be familiar with medical terminology and personal computer software. The Manager of Medical Records must be knowledgeable in all aspects of a medical records department. Minimum of two years experience is necessary.

Required skills:

  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language.
  • Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must posses the ability to deal tactfully with co-workers, physicians, patients and the general public.
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age and of good moral character.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other personnel.
  • Ability to minimize waste of supplies, misuse of equipment, etc.
  • Possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
  • Be able to follow written and oral communications.
  • Be knowledgeable in micro-computers, data input and output.
  • Be computer literate to produce letters, memos and other business documents for communication purposes.
