What to Expect
This role will be based out of the Greater Houston Area (TX) however will be expected to work in Fremont (CA) to support early builds and validation for the first 6-12 months. Other travel may be required.
The Metrology Supervisor at the Megafactory Houston Factory will work as a member of the Metrology group in the Quality organization. They will supervise all operations inside the Metrology Lab, which runs 24/7 on all four shifts. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are an absolute requirement to establish effective working relationships within Tesla cross-functional teams. The Metrology Supervisor role will also need strong knowledge of applied Metrology as well as Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) to be able to answer team questions or support other cross-functional teams. Work will require participation in cross-functional teams and supplier meetings.
What You'll Do
Support development of each Metrology Technician's expertise through training sessions, external technical training, and providing direction on structured projects, including organizing and leading weekly update meetings
Tesla people leaders are responsible for a variety of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) assurance functions, including ensuring their teams' safety training is current, documenting EHS incidents, proactively correcting workplace hazards in the areas, and empowering others to continuously improve operations
Support and lead the implementation of Metrology standards and best practices in all aspects of Dimensional inspection both inside and outside the Metrology Lab
Ensure all Metrology equipment is operating efficiently 24/7, with proper tools and time for the team to complete work; coordinate calibration activities to ensure all test and measurement equipment is calibrated prior to use
Work closely with Dimensional and Quality Engineers on continuous improvement activities, problem-solving, and improving overall product quality, including ensuring proper CMM and PCMM programs
Conduct Bill of Materials (BOM) reviews with Quality Engineers and Incoming Quality Teams to confirm all Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) and in-process checks measure the correct features
Support Leads and Dimensional Engineers in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) while ensuring best practices are followed during CMM and PCMM operations, and present clear, concise updates to executive-level stakeholders
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
5+ years experience in Manufacturing or Quality environments, with good knowledge of Dimensional Metrology and strong understanding of GD&T
Flexible availability, willing to support the team 24/7 in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with colleagues and cross-functional teams in a professional, organized manner
Proven ability to operate relevant personal computing hardware and standard software (Microsoft Office Suite, mainly Outlook and Excel)
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, support team members' growth, and maintain operational efficiency in a 24/7 lab setting
Experience collaborating with engineers and technicians on continuous improvement, equipment calibration, and implementation of best practices in metrology operations
Essential Physical Demands
Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours a day
Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours/day, including over varied and uneven terrain
Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 35 lbs., including the ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs
Frequently and repetitively, bend, lift and reach to install parts
Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours/day
Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding or other high structures
Ability to find issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing
Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to:\u202fsafety glasses, safety shoes, bump caps, arm protection, and adhering\u202fto prescribed safety rules and guidelines
