Job Title: Metrologist
Job Description
The Metrologist develops, executes, and maintains measurement and calibration systems that ensure the accuracy and traceability of dimensional and process measurements in a manufacturing environment. This role establishes measurement standards, analyzes data, and implements best-practice metrology methods to ensure compliance with requirements. The position offers the opportunity to build and shape a receiving inspection and metrology function, providing strong visibility, leadership growth, and technical ownership while working hands-on with advanced measurement tools.
Responsibilities
- Develop, execute, and maintain measurement and calibration systems that ensure accurate and traceable dimensional and process measurements.
- Establish and maintain measurement standards and best-practice metrology methods to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements.
- Advise technical staff and leadership on the selection of appropriate measurement equipment, standards, and best practices.
- Manage the calibration program for measurement devices, including micrometers, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), scales, and other inspection tools to ensure they meet standards and specifications.
- Own calibrated tool management systems, including scheduling, traceability, documentation, and compliance with measurement standards.
- Lead and mentor a team of quality control technicians, providing hands-on training, guidance, and skills development.
- Lead the receiving inspection function by establishing inspection workflows where procedures do not yet exist and standardizing physical inspection practices for mechanical components.
- Inspect finished products, new parts, and tools for dimensional accuracy and quality using a wide range of inspection tools and complex equipment.
- Create, document, and refine measurement methods, protocols, and standards to support consistent and repeatable inspection outcomes.
- Analyze measurement data to ensure consistency, identify trends, and troubleshoot discrepancies, and clearly report findings to stakeholders.
- Develop measurement programs for automated inspection systems, including CMMs and other automated metrology equipment.
- Support new product development by advising on measurement feasibility, tolerancing, and inspection planning, including interpretation and application of GD&T.
- Apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to guide inspection planning, measurement strategies, and acceptance criteria.
- Collaborate closely with quality, engineering, and manufacturing teams to align inspection strategies with production and quality objectives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the broader quality and metrology functions.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Metrology or a related engineering field.
- At least 5 years of metrology or precision measurement experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven ability to lead a receiving inspection function and establish inspection workflows and standardized inspection practices.
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and developing inspection or quality technicians, including hands-on training and skills progression.
- Hands-on expertise using a broad range of inspection tools, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, scales, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs).
- Experience with CMM operation and programming.
- Demonstrated proficiency in GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and its application to inspection planning and measurement interpretation.
- Experience managing calibration programs, including scheduling, traceability, documentation, and compliance with measurement standards.
- Strong leadership, team-building, and mentoring skills.
- Ability to analyze measurement data, troubleshoot discrepancies, and communicate findings clearly.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with advanced metrology tools beyond standard hand and bench instruments.
- Experience developing measurement programs for automated inspection systems such as CMMs.
- Ability to create and refine measurement methods, protocols, and standards.
- Strong collaboration skills with quality, engineering, and manufacturing teams.
- Commitment to continuous improvement in inspection processes, calibration systems, and metrology practices.
Work Environment
This role operates in an onsite manufacturing and inspection environment with daily interaction across quality, engineering, and manufacturing teams. The position involves a blend of hands-on inspection work, training and mentoring of technicians, and analytical tasks such as data analysis and program development. Work is typically performed during standard business hours, with flexibility to support receiving and inspection needs as required. The environment emphasizes collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement, and uses a variety of inspection technologies including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, scales, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), and advanced metrology tools.
