  • Work with USS mills to establish material boundary samples, steel engineering quality standards, and develop testing and evaluation techniques to ensure material quality is to customer''s expectations and requirements.
  • Provide direction and leadership to CTS Engineer''s (Customer Technical Service Engineers) and support internal USS functions to drive resolution of customer and outside processor technical and quality issues with our products.
  • Drive customer and expectations in problem solving
  • Lead teams on customer specific formats as required (8D/5D, A3, DMAIC 6Panel, PRR, etc.). Act as an advocate for our customers to ensure the USS team meets product, delivery, and application requirements, including specific process requirements such as change management and problem-solving process disciplines
  • Take the lead in managing the quality relationships with the assigned key customer accounts.
  • Monitor quality performance, support and actively communicate corrective action work across the supply chains (from mills to outside processors thru "end use" customers).
  • Contribute towards continuous improvement activities in product quality and process efficiency across the supply chain.
  • Coordinate quality activities with corporate, mill, processor, commercial and customer quality departments, Ensure accurate transfer of customer requirements or processing instructions to the mills and processors.
  • Proactively engage across functions and within the businesses to identify meaningful opportunities for improving efficiencies and reducing costs in line with the USS Carnegie Way. Lead by example and aids Contract Team and Customer Production and Quality to develops others on quality principles and tools for implementing creative engineering solutions for system and process improvements.

Job Requirements:

  • This position requires a Bachelor''s Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related field of study plus five (5) years of experience in the job offered a similar materials engineering occupation within the steel industry.
  • In Addition, must have 5 years of experience in each of the following: Customer technical service (CTS) for steel quality control and materials requirements; Analyzing and assimilating data from material laboratory results to develop engineering solutions; Performing formability data analysis to recommend tooling, process, or design changes to aid with customer formability and manufacturing issues; Assessing customer product requirements and specifications for materials engineering products; Measuring mechanical requirements for steel manufacturing, including yield strength, tensile strength, and total elongation; Assessing chemical requirements and coating requirements for steel manufacturing; Materials engineering project or program management; and, Providing business support for materials engineering projects, including reviewing profit and loss statements, Capital expenditure, ROI, and costs of goods.
