DESCRIPTION:

This is paraprofessional support work in training, providing direct care and support, and implementing rehabilitative programs for mentally ill patients. Work includes supervising lower level Habilitation Aides, counseling consumers, ensuring patient recreational, leisure, diversional and social needs are met, maintaining physical environment, charting and participating in treatment and rehabilitative programming. Responsibilities may include being in charge of a specific patient activity area. Work is performed under general supervision of a recreation therapist.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS: (A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned).
  • Trains clients in order to assist them in adjusting to the work environment and living situation.
  • Assigns, schedules, directs, and oversees the work of Mental Health Workers / Habilitation Aides in order to ensure compliance with programs and services.
  • Implements and monitors individual client case plans in order to help client achieve stated goals and objectives.
  • Counsels individuals in order to resolve personal problems and provide understanding of acceptable personal and social behavior.
  • Checks off unit environment in order to ensure cleanliness, safety and readiness for use.
  • Serves as group leader for patients in order to provide treatment and assist them in reaching established goals.
  • Trains lower level Habilitation Aides in order to maintain competent staff.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates community events, and recreational and other activities for patients in order to coordinate off grounds activities.
  • Records behavior, observations and response to services on patient charts in order to maintain patient records.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: (These are required to successfully perform the work assigned).
  • Knowledge of mental illness and its social, economic, and psychological aspects.
  • Knowledge of hospital and community programs and their use in patient treatment.
  • Knowledge of interview techniques and the fundamentals of human development and behavior.
  • Ability to relate positively and therapeutically to patients.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain complete and comprehensive records and reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four (4) years of education and/or progressively responsible experience which would provide knowledge and abilities in the treatment of individuals with mental illness and development disabilities.
