Join the Medical team at the Texas Civil Commitment Center (TCCC) in Littlefield, Texas, where compassionate, clinically strong professionals support residents in a secure treatment setting. As a Mental Health RN, you'll partner with an interdisciplinary care team to provide skilled nursing care, support treatment planning, and help make a difference every day.

Position Summary: Performs duties concerned with the care of the sick and injured, prevention of illness and promotion of good mental health in compliance with MTC Medical and customer directives.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments including psychosocial evaluation. Develop individual nursing care plans and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for patient care, revising plans as necessary.
  • Read, understand and implement psychiatrist's orders
  • Facilitate communication with psychiatrist for medication and treatment orders, responding to emergencies as required.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management for patients experiencing acute disturbances.
  • Coordinate scheduling for mental health providers and psychiatrists.
  • Assist psychiatrist in patient examinations and treatment procedures
  • Administer medication in accordance with policies and procedures, documenting treatments comprehensively.
  • Educate individuals with mental illness on medication benefits and potential side effects, particularly psychotropic medications.
  • Continuously assess patient conditions, documenting observations related to mental status, physical health, and medication responses in electronic medical record.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in providing care for patients with various psychiatric conditions and behaviors, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Apply knowledge of psychiatric disorders in planning nursing care strategies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in adherence to infection control practices.
  • Practice cost containment and utilization management for patient care and facility operations.
  • Ensure strict security and confidentiality of all medical records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Review medical files to verify accurate documentation of provided services.
  • Closely monitor all potential severe illnesses in patients in care.
  • Comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
  • Assess, identify and document high-risk symptoms/behaviors in patient, such as risk for harm to self or others.
  • Provide health counseling and education to individuals or groups as required
  • Safeguard medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by clients; securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment. Control medication, syringes, or other medical supplies.
  • Perform work on an on-call basis, as required.
  • Prepare and maintain narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports and logs.
  • Assist corporate counsel with responses to client litigation matters.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings; to facilitate effective communication of relevant information within the medical/mental health unit.
  • Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures; take appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
  • Properly document medical and mental health care.
  • Initiate and complete investigations and inquiries with accuracy, as directed, gather information and evidence, interview and obtain statements; exercise independent judgment by determining when probably cause exists to recommend disciplinary action.
  • Perform emergency response duties, including basic medical aid, and evacuating individuals from hazardous situations.
  • Interpret and apply an extensive variety of medical and technical instructions and documents
  • Read, analyze, comprehend and interpret medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents, including the processing of such documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons and other legal writs.
  • Promote positive social skills development through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when behavioral issues when necessary.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Degree in nursing, current, valid nursing RN license in the state of Texas or a compact state. Must possess current CPR certification. Must work within Texas state board of nursing scope of practice. Valid driver's license in the state of with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Post Hire Requirements:

Upon hire must successfully complete required pre-service and annual training requirements. Must maintain security clearance.
