Position Overview

Position Summary:

The mental health clinician provides direct mental health services to students through individual, couples, and group counseling, assessment, and crisis intervention. This position supports student well-being and academic success by providing short-term counseling, consultation, and referrals. A mental health clinician supports outreach and prevention efforts, collaborates with campus partners, and participates in after-hours crisis response as part of a comprehensive campus mental health program.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intake interviews, mental health assessments, and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling, including crisis intervention.
  • Maintain an active clinical caseload and provide short-term, goal-focused counseling services as part of the Department of Health and Wellness to support student well-being and success.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation and counseling records in accordance with ethical, legal, and institutional standards.
  • Administer and interpret psychological screenings and assessments as appropriate.
  • Provide referrals to campus and community resources as needed.
  • Participate in after-hours crisis intervention through an on-call rotation.
  • Consult with students, faculty, and staff regarding student mental health concerns.
  • Support outreach, prevention, and wellness programming for students and campus departments.
  • Support collaboration efforts with campus partners and community agencies to enhance student well-being.
  • Engage in professional development and continuing education to maintain clinical competence.
  • Regular and predictable attendance required.
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects assigned in support of the Universitys mission, core values, and goals.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Masters degree in mental health counseling, social work, or related mental health field
  • Ability to obtain New Mexico licensure (LMHC, LPCC, LMSW, or LCSW) within 90 days of hire
  • Maintain active licensure for continued employment
  • Commitment to student success and the mission of the University

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Two or more years of post-graduate clinical experience, preferably in a college or university counseling center
  • Experience providing crisis intervention and participating in on-call rotations
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including first-generation students, veterans, and historically underrepresented groups
  • Experience conducting outreach, psychoeducation, and wellness programming

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage a clinical caseload and maintain appropriate documentation
  • Knowledge of college student development and mental health trends in higher education
  • Ability to assess mental health needs and develop effective treatment plans
  • Commitment to ethical and legal standards, including FERPA and HIPAA compliance
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with campus partners and multidisciplinary teams

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office and campus environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, computer use, and participation in meetings
  • May require occasional evening or weekend hours for programs and campus initiatives
  • Participation in on-call crisis response rotation
  • Occasional lifting of materials up to 1520 pounds

Employee Educational Assistance Plan

Eastern New Mexico University offers a tuition waiver for regular employees and retirees. This program waives the tuition for three courses (up to nine credit hours) per semester.
