Position Summary The Mental Health Clinician will be responsible for providing mental health services to inmates in a correctional setting including crisis intervention, screening, assessment, and evaluation, psychoeducational services, individual and group therapy, treatment planning, and release planning. Monitor inmates with mental health service needs in general population and specialized housing.

Supervision Received Receives general direction and oversight from the Health Services Administrator and the Psychiatrist in performing duties in accordance with all best practices and established guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide direct clinical care and consultation services in accordance with BCSO policies and procedures and in accordance with the ethical standards of relevant professional organizations, e.g. NASW.

  • Provide crisis intervention, screening, assessment, and evaluation of the inmate population.
  • Conducts individual and group therapy, psychoeducational services.
  • Provides treatment planning and release planning.
  • Performs initial and ongoing mental health assessments and provide treatment teaching and/or referral to medical providers in accordance with Facility-established.
  • Documents assessments and interventions in accordance with providers orders.
  • Completes documentation as required by facility and practice standards.
  • Performs Sick Call triaging inmate requests for mental health needs.
  • Assists and collaborates with the providers and nurses regarding sick call and all aspects of patient care.
  • Communicates with the Health Services Administrator and Shift Supervisors to ensure medical conditions are treated and considered in facility processes.
  • Provides emergency mental health care and triage in collaboration with HCP when able within the scope of LSWLMHC practice to inmates and staff when needed.
  • Maintains the confidentiality and accuracy of all inmate residents medical records, ongoing assessments, and reassessments of needs, mental health examination, etc.
  • Completes assessments regarding suicide risk of harm timely.
  • Orders level of watch" when at risk and performs assessments for increasing or decreasing level of watch" for those identified at risk.
  • Consults with the Health services staff and security departments regarding the appropriate level of supervision required to maintain inmate safety.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and modifies mental health plans of care for all inmates.
  • Consults with the Psychiatrist and health services staff for major mental illness relative to transfer to a mental health facility/hospital.
  • Provides Psycho-social assessments and documentation of such as needed to the case management staff.
  • Understand the relevant accreditation standards, assure compliance, and maintain all timelines required within the scope of the position.
  • Communicates and work with both facility staff and outside support agencies to facilitate patient treatment.
  • Provides individual and group counseling and case management services to pre-trial and sentenced men and women at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.
  • Assists in the administration of standardized assessment tools to male/female offenders and participate in development of individualized treatment plans.
  • Assists in the administration and completion of intake, discharge, and management information system paperwork on a timely basis.
  • Works in a team model with both uniformed and non-uniformed treatment staff to ensure therapeutic community and continuity of care standards throughout the facility.

Requirements

  • A Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in social work, human services, psychology, or relevant area of study is required.
  • LMHC, LCSW, or LICSW required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in clinical social work or mental health counseling, group and individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and mental health assessments is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a correctional facility, mental health facility, or detox center is preferred but not required.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
