YMCA Opening Staff – Job Description

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 5:45 AM – 2:45 PM

Position Summary

The Opening Staff member is responsible for preparing the YMCA facility for daily operations, providing excellent customer service to members, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and supporting wellness and program operations throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Opening Duties

• Arrive before opening to prepare the facility for members.

• Turn on lights, music, and equipment as needed.

• Ensure fitness equipment and workout areas are clean and safe.

• Conduct facility walk-through to check safety and cleanliness.

Member Services

• Greet members and guests in a friendly and welcoming manner.

• Answer questions about programs, schedules, and memberships.

• Provide basic fitness guidance and support when needed.

• Enforce YMCA policies and safety procedures.

Wellness Floor Supervision

• Monitor the fitness floor to ensure proper and safe equipment use.

• Assist members with equipment setup and basic exercise guidance.

• Maintain cleanliness by wiping down equipment and organizing weights.

Program Support

• Assist with morning classes or program setup as needed.

• Support personal trainers and instructors when necessary.

• Help members sign up for programs or classes.

Facility Maintenance

• Maintain cleanliness of locker rooms, fitness floor, and common areas.

• Report maintenance issues or safety concerns to supervisors.

• Restock cleaning supplies and towels if applicable.

Member Engagement

• Build positive relationships with members.

• Encourage participation in YMCA programs and services.

• Promote a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Qualifications

• Strong customer service skills.

• Ability to work early morning shifts.

• Basic knowledge of fitness equipment and exercise safety preferred.

• CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

• Ability to lift light equipment and stay active during shift.
