JOB PURPOSE
The Senior Services Medicare Counselor provides advanced counseling, education, and case management support to Medicare beneficiaries, with a focus on resolving complex issues through the Senior Medicare Patrol program. This role ensures individuals receive accurate, up-to-date Medicare information and guidance to make informed healthcare decisions. The position is responsible for managing and documenting cases, assisting beneficiaries and advocates in understanding benefits and plan options, and delivering outreach and educational presentations across Northern Nevada. Regular travel is required to support in-person counseling and community engagement, with increased travel during the Medicare open enrollment period.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist beneficiaries and advocates in understanding Medicare benefits and options.
- Provide unbiased guidance in selecting appropriate Medicare plans.
- Educate beneficiaries, families, and caregivers on Medicare benefits and fraud prevention.
- Research and resolve complex Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) cases.
- Deliver presentations and training to community partners and the public.
- Demonstrate compassion and professionalism when working with seniors, individuals with disabilities, and diverse populations.
Advocacy & Partnerships
- Advocate for consumers and their families when working with service providers and agencies.
- Serve as a reliable resource on long-term services and supports.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners across public and private sectors.
- Support volunteer training, including shadowing, database entry, and responding to questions.
Documentation & Compliance
- Document all client interactions, services, referrals, contracts and outcomes in required database systems.
- Ensure documentation is timely, accurate, and compliant with program standards and HIPAA requirements.
Outreach & Service Delivery
- Provide Medicare counseling services in person, by phone, or via email at approved locations.
- Conduct off-site outreach to meet client needs.
- Participate in outreach, marketing, and community education events.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain working knowledge of AHN programs, systems, and required databases.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and internal departments.
- Attend staff meetings and supervision sessions.
- Flexibility to accommodate department-determined work schedules, which may change based on operational needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) – Preferred.
- High School Diploma required; Bachelor's degree in social work, public health, psychology, or a related field preferred.
- Must obtain Medicare Assistance Program Level II Certification within 3 months of hire.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in Medicare and/or health insurance billing, or related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database systems.
- Experience working with seniors, people with disabilities, and/or diverse populations preferred.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate and AHN company vehicle as needed.
- Must adhere to HIPAA regulations.
WORK ENVIORNMENT
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, and the employee usually works in a climate-controlled office environment
- Ability to sit for extended periods (computer or vehicle) and stand for up to 3-6 hours per day.
- Be able to withstand hand/wrist deviation and repetition
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds on a regular basis.
