North County Serenity House (NCSH) is a residential program of HealthRIGHT 360, founded in 1966 to provide substance use disorder services in the community. NCSH provides a gender-responsive and trauma-informed environment using evidence-based and best practices that recognize and account for the role that trauma frequently plays in substance use and criminal histories of women.

For clients with co-occurring mental illness, we provide integrated substance use and mental health services that treat both conditions as primary. Our residential facility serves up to 120 women with capacity for up to 20 children under 5 years of age seeking recovery from substance use disorders.

The Medical Technician I (Med Tech I) works in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible treatment outcome for the client and provide treatment in accordance with HealthRIGHT 360s philosophy, goals, policies, mission, and vision.

Med Tech I provides facility coverage by supervising clients during medication line, withdrawal management, and free time. This position is customer service-focused and is quick to take the lead in providing crisis intervention and client stabilization. Med Tech I assists clients in self-administering their medication, teaches clients to self-manage their illness and physical health condition, coaches clients to keep appointments with primary care physicians or other health appointments, screens clients for symptoms of common infectious diseases, and follows established policies and procedures to triage client medical complaints and links clients to the appropriate level of care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Service • Assist with assessment, intake, transition, and discharge of clients entering and exiting the withdrawal management unit. • Monitor clients progress in withdrawal management and maintain strong communication with the medical team. • Provide alcohol and drug counseling and support, maintaining appropriate ethical boundaries with all clients, monitoring client conduct, recording client activity, and informing the treatment team of potential concerns. • Provide medical and behavioral crisis intervention and triage clients as needed within the scope of practice. • Demonstrate strong crisis intervention and client stabilization skills. • Monitor the medication line and observe clients medication self-administration. • Document clients medication self-administration with accuracy. • Collect, organize, and report results of daily urinalyses.

Facility Operations • Act as liaison for removal of biohazardous waste. • Maintain stock of OTC medications and First Aid supplies. • Perform periodic facility checks to ensure and maintain the safety and security of the facility. • Complete detox rounds and behavioral support rounds at 30-minute intervals and document each round accurately. • As needed, assist with duties of checking in visitors and monitoring visits, ensuring clients sign in with a valid pass, monitoring clients when they return from off-site passes, and checking all bags upon entering the facility. • Sign emergency passes when the primary counselor is out of the office. • Maintain supplies for urine and oral fluid drug testing and ensure Chain of Custody for all positive tests. • Answer telephone and respond to inquiries regarding withdrawal management services within 24 hours.

Documentation • Maintain all medical documentation, including but not limited to: • Centrally Stored Medication and Destruction forms • Medication Self-Administration forms • Controlled Substance logs • Shift-to-Shift Count forms • Discharge Medication forms • Ensure all medical documentation received from clients is uploaded into the electronic healthcare record and communicates to appropriate staff. • Maintain compliance with due dates for all clinical documentation. • Write and complete all progress notes within 72 hours of service delivery. • Document all client UA (urine analysis) using the UA form and a progress note. • Complete withdrawal management paperwork. • Document withdrawal management rounds and behavioral support rounds every 30 minutes. • Document client updates and incidents in the facility log daily. • Complete same-day incident reports. • Complete all documentation in compliance with agency policy and procedures, HIPAA, 42-CFR, funder standards, and other standards to satisfy internal and external evaluating requirements.

Administration and Other Duties • Attend required training and meetings. • Complete all assigned training in a timely manner. • Communicate collaboratively with all members of the behavioral health team, including medical, mental health, substance use disorders, and other staff. • Seek consultation when encountering new and/or high-risk medical or clinical circumstances. • Coordinate with referral sources for warm hand-offs to and from the program. • Consult with prescribing providers on behalf of the Addiction Medicine Team (AMT). • Maintain full compliance with registration requirements if applicable. • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification • High school diploma or equivalent. • Bachelors degree in Social Work or related preferred. • Substance Use Disorder Counselor registration from an accredited California agency (CCAPPCAADE CADTP) preferred. • Valid First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Experience • Preferably a minimum of two years of experience working with clients in substance abuse treatment, relapse prevention, and recovery in a residential or withdrawal management/detox setting. • Must complete background check and livescan clearance.
