Medical Secretary

Recovery Room

Position Overview:

The Pre-Anesthesia Area/Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PAA/PACU) Medical Secretary is a non-licensed health care worker who assists professional nursing caregivers and providers by performing secretarial duties for the PAA/PACU area. The duties of the Medical Secretary include general clerical duties, maintaining an orderly and clean environment, and direct patient care responsibilities as delegated by the professional caregivers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates surgery schedule daily, manages the updates accordingly.
  • Schedules surgical cases after consulting with the charge nurse and anesthesia staff and communicates special needs to the charge nurse.
  • Prepares the appropriate documents necessary (i.e. informed consent, surgical checklists) for professional nursing staff and providers.
  • Assists patients in making follow-up appointments for post procedure care as needed.
  • Facilitates quality improvement activities for the Surgery, Anesthesia, and other departments as requested.
  • Manages time and attendance for OR and surgery patients to enhance Anesthesia flow.
  • Orders and maintains supplies and forms for the surgical services department.
  • Maintains professional behavior and uses effective communication when dealing with all external and internal customers.
  • Manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously.
  • Maintains patient information databases (Cerner, Phreesia, etc.).
  • Problem solves and suggests solutions to enhance team function.
  • Attends mandatory staff meetings and completes mandatory educational requirements of Winona Health caregivers.
  • Understands, supports, and integrates into one's position the organization's mission/vision/values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Completion of a Medical Secretary Program
  • Basic Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology

Preferred:

  • Previous Medical Secretary Experience
  • Current BLS Certification
