POSITION SUMMARY

Collects specimens and performs testing ensuring that testing is conducted in an accurate, efficient and timely manner and assists in performing laboratory procedures in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory agency requirements (FDA, AABB, CLIA, etc.) to achieve the best quality patient care in accordance with the philosophy, goals and objectives of Pender Community Hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Enters order when needed and retrieves orders from the laboratory information system.
  • Verifies identity of the patient and collects the proper specimen.
  • Prepares specimen for in-house and reference laboratory testing.
  • Reviews in-house and reference laboratory test results for accuracy before finalizing report.
  • Reports any critical results in a timely manner following documentation policy.
  • Performs and records instrument maintenance, including dailly start up and shut down procedures, according to manufacturer or laboratory requirements.
  • Maintains working knowledge of standard operating procedures.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation problems
  • Performs and records quality control data and documents corrective actions
  • Completes annual competency testing
  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly; washes laboratory glassware as needed.
  • Handles infectious material to protect all laboratory personnel, collect blood and other specimens under aseptic conditions.
  • Document when supplies are running low and stocks supplies when delivered.

Hours: Minimum 40 hours/week, 10 hour shifts

Required Experience:

Education, Experience:

  • Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology
  • Completed training in phlebotomy techniques
  • Prior computer experience (Word, Excel, etc.) preferred
  • Previous experience in a laboratory setting preferred

Certificates, Licensure, Registrations:

  • Current laboratory AMT or ASCP certification or equivalent or eligible to obtain
