We are seeking a Medical Lab Technician for our NEW Bluffton Free Standing Emergency Department.

Team member is responsible for performing all laboratory procedures, including quality control, specimen collection, processing, testing, and reporting of lab results. Team member will also assist in the evaluation of new or modified techniques when required. They will advise and assist in the orientation and training of other personnel on equipment and software, as necessary. Depending on the assigned department they may also have a combination of responsibilities including key operator of specified instrumentation, supply orders and inventory, instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting, management of vendor relationships, procedure writing assistance and/or oversight of an off shift.

What We're Looking For:
  • Education: 2 Year / Associate Degree, required. Associate degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical laboratory or equivalent education and training OR successfully completed military training of 50 or more weeks. 
  • Experience:
    • Specialty Areas (BB, Flow, and Micro): One year experience as laboratory scientist for specialty areas (BB, Flow, and Micro). (Clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement), preferred.
    • Three years of experience as a medical laboratory technician, required.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: MLT Certification from ASCP or AMT, required. Flow Cytometry only (if team member holds no other scientist certification): MDT(AMT) or SCYM(ASCP), required.
  • Additional Skills Required:
    • New graduates must obtain certification within 12-months of hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
    • All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004, must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006, must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
    • Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
    • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
    • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
    • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
    • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
    • Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.
    • Ability to follow written protocols.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to communicate clearly.
What You'll Do:

Laboratory Testing & Quality

• Perform analytical testing of patient specimens and ensure accurate, timely results.
• Conduct quality control testing to maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory testing.
• Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
• Complete competency and proficiency testing to maintain technical skills and compliance standards.
• As a Core Sciences MLT II, may serve as a Key Operator with advanced responsibility for maintenance and troubleshooting activities.

Documentation & Regulatory Compliance

• Maintain required documentation for laboratory procedures and testing activities.
• Process laboratory requisitions and prepare and distribute reports.
• Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other computer systems to support daily operations.
• Participate in the implementation and compliance of regulatory standards and inspection readiness.
• Assist with developing new procedures and revising existing laboratory procedures.

Education & Training

• Participate in continuing education activities to enhance technical knowledge and skills.
• Perform all duties in accordance with regulatory requirements and inspection standards.
• Support instrument training and educational initiatives for laboratory team members, as assigned.

Customer Support & Collaboration

• Provide information, assistance, and consultation to providers, clinicians, and other requestors.
• Foster collaborative relationships and recognize interdependencies across departments to support exceptional patient care.

Operations Management

• Promote the efficient use of laboratory supplies and materials.
• Participate in inventory management and supply monitoring activities.

Process Improvement & Strategic Initiatives

• Contribute to the improvement of laboratory methods, workflows, and operational processes.
• Support departmental initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

Teamwork & Communication

• Collaborate with team members to achieve patient care and operational goals.
• Maintain regular, professional communication with coworkers and leadership.
• Participate in department meetings and team discussions.
• Assist with investigating laboratory issues and unusual situations.
• As a Core Sciences MLT II, may provide shift oversight and leadership support as assigned.

• Utilize appropriate motor skills and manual dexterity to safely obtain and manipulate specimens.
• Follow all laboratory and organizational safety policies and procedures.
• Properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
