Shift Schedule:
Day Shift: 4:00 AM 4:30 PM (0400 1630)
Schedule prepared by DOU Nurse Manager and posted at least 4 weeks in advance
May be required to work beyond regularly expected shifts as needed across various patient care units
How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: TBD (based on coverage needs)
Certifications:
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Basic Phlebotomy Certification required
Basic Arrhythmia Recognition Course/Certification required
State licensure in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or District of Columbia required
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience Needed: Minimum 1 year of work experience as a Health Technician
Special Skills Needed:
Knowledge and competency in performing electrocardiograms (ECGs) including proper lead placement, equipment operation, and basic recognition of common rhythm abnormalities
Proficiency in phlebotomy procedures
Basic typing and PC computer skills with ability to enter clinical assessments in an electronic medical record (VISTA system)
Ability to communicate urgent or abnormal ECG findings to the responsible provider in a timely manner
Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members
Strong organizational and communication skills with ability to exercise independent judgment
Responsibilities:
Provide direct and indirect patient care in inpatient areas including ICU, Direct Observation Unit (DOU), and Medical Surgical Telemetry
Perform phlebotomy procedures to support the program's clinical needs
Perform electrocardiograms (ECGs) and other support-related diagnostic tests; ensure timely completion, accurate tracing acquisition, and communicate any urgent or abnormal findings to the responsible provider
Perform basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) for patients including bathing, turning, and dressing
Transport patients using electric gurneys
Provide up to 1:1 observation for patients requiring close monitoring
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide appropriate care in accordance with unit standards
Enter clinical assessments and patient care documentation electronically in the VISTA computer system
Ensure inpatient ward needs are met in a support capacity to enhance patient care
Comply with all VALBHS objectives, policies, and VA mandatory training requirement
