A medical billing coordinator will ensure the appropriate appointments are made for the specialty providers, verifying insurance and making sure the appropriate referrals are attached to the visits, handle pre-authorizations for physical therapy, prescriptions and radiology requests (MRI & CBCT), and ensure all pre-operative results are received prior to surgery dates. 

Medical billing will include  reviewing patient medical records to accurately assign standardized codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services, then submitting claims to insurance companies and patients to ensure healthcare providers receive proper payment. Key responsibilities include managing electronic records, verifying insurance, following up on denied claims, and maintaining patient data confidentiality while collaborating with both patients and insurance providers. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Medical Billing: 

Preparing and submitting medical claims, ensuring correct codes have been assigned for claims and preauthorizations to insurance companies and patients for services rendered. 

Verifying necessary referrals for prescriptions, PT, and radiology needs.

  • Insurance & Payment Management: 

Verifying insurance coverage, processing payments, and tracking outstanding balances working long side the business manager.

  • Claim/Preauthorization AR: 

Investigating and resolving denied or partially paid claims, correcting errors, and resubmitting for payment. 

  • Patient Communication: 

Answering inquiries from patients regarding their bills and insurance.

Acts as a liaison and first contact between patients and their health providers as well as with other health providers and pharmacists.

  • Record Keeping: 

Maintaining organized, accurate, and confidential electronic health records (EHR).

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two years’ related experience as a medical billing specialist.  Must be a Certified Medical Billing Professional

  

Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

 Essential Skills:

  • Knowledge of Coding Systems: Proficiency with ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes. 
  • Medical Terminology: Strong understanding of medical terms, anatomy, physiology, and treatments. 
  • Computer & EHR Software Proficiency: Ability to navigate electronic health record systems and coding software. 
  • Attention to Detail: Critical for spotting and correcting errors in patient records and claims. 
  • Communication Skills: Effectively communicating with patients, providers, and insurance company representatives. 
  • Organizational Skills: Managing and organizing patient data and documents efficiently. 
  • Discretion: Upholding patient privacy and complying with HIPAA regulations.
