Once accepted into the Medical Assistant Trainee program, attendance to every class is mandatory. At the successful completion of the Medical Assistant Trainee Program, the Trainee will transfer to open (Full-Time) Certified Medical Assistant position(s) within SCHS. Once certified as a Medical Assistant, the MA Trainee will transition to their new CMA position. Upon completion of the program and certification you will become a certified Medical Assistant and can complete your two-year commitment working at any St. Charles Health System Clinic.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant, COCC Trainee position is assimilated throughout St. Charles Health System, encompassing practices in three Central Oregon counties and numerous specialties, including family care, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, immediate/urgent care, cardiology, pulmonology, rheumatology, general surgery, cancer care, behavioral health, orthopedics, neurosurgery, physiatry, and sleep medicine.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Medical Assistant COCC Trainee position is a temporary training role designed for individuals actively enrolled in an approved Medical Assistant education program through Central Oregon Community College (COCC). This role provides paid, structured clinical exposure in an ambulatory care setting while the trainee completes required coursework, labs, and clinical competencies toward Medical Assistant certification. Acceptance of this role includes agreement to a two-year, full-time service commitment as a Medical Assistant with St. Charles Health System upon completion of training and certification, if offered and accepted.
This position does not directly manage any other caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: Under supervision, the Medical Assistant Trainee will:
EDUCATION: Required: High School Diploma or GED. Actively enrolled in the two-term or three-term COCC Medical Assistant Program with the ability to test for national certification within 30 days from graduating from the program. Preferred: N/A
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Required: Must obtain appropriate certification from one of the following within 30 days of program completion to ensure continued employment; The American Medical Technology Association (AMT), The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), The National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) Certification, National Healthcareer Association (NHA). AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification. Ability to travel to business functions/trainings/meetings and all St. Charles Health System worksites. Preferred: N/A
EXPERIENCE: Required: N/A Preferred: Basic knowledge of ICD-10, CM/CPT/HCPCS coding conventions and procedures. Working knowledge of medical practice management information systems. Basic knowledge of medical office documentation standards.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
