Summary:

Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and/or EKGs, check schedules, and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist with walking, transferring, and dressing.
  • Collect and process specimens, perform point of care testing, and prepare for exams.
  • Assist physicians with procedures, take vital signs, and relay instructions to patients and families.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information.
  • Send and receive patient medical records, obtain lab/x-ray reports, and manage charts.
  • Enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests.
  • Inventory, order, or re-stock medical supplies.
  • Set up examination rooms and instruments following proper sterilization techniques.
  • Maintain logging systems for refrigeration of medications, point of care testing, and sterilization processes.
  • Check expiration dates on medications and medical supplies and dispose of them appropriately.
  • Follow standards and procedures to maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment.
  • Comply with personal protective equipment requirements against exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Maintain medical charts, including filing, Op Reports, test results, and home care forms.
  • Schedule surgeries/procedures and verify times with patients; prepare charts and consent forms.
  • Perform proficient phlebotomy duties as required.
  • Schedule appointments and register patients, updating demographic and insurance information.
  • Maintain and confirm patient office schedules.
  • Verify and update insurance information using internal or web sources.
  • Perform and verify pre-certification for procedures as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED with completion of an approved Medical Assistant certificate course.
  • Medical Assistant certificate from an approved school.
  • BLS certification required, issued by AHA.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with multicultural and language-deficit patients.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Proficient in medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record or billing systems preferred.
