Job Description

This role seeks a caring, motivated, and well-organized certified Medical Assistant to support a community-focused health center that provides primary care, dental, and mental health services to children and adults, with a strong emphasis on serving individuals and families living in or near public housing. The Medical Assistant supports primary care providers and nurses by delivering both clinical and administrative services that ensure smooth clinic operations, high-quality patient care, and a positive experience for patients and their families.

Responsibilities

• Assist primary care providers and nurses during routine medical examinations and procedures to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care.
• Deliver exceptional customer service to patients and their family members, treating all individuals with respect and empathy.
• Collect and document patient medical history, vital signs, medication lists, and other pertinent information accurately and completely.
• Maintain precise and up-to-date patient records using electronic health record (EHR) systems, following established documentation standards.
• Provide patient education on medical procedures, treatments, and preventive care, while advocating for patient needs and ensuring they understand instructions.
• Maintain effective communication with the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and support a collaborative clinical environment.
• Collect and process point-of-care tests and laboratory specimens according to clinic protocols and safety standards.
• Perform basic medical tests such as vision screenings and other clinic-approved procedures as directed by providers.
• Maintain laboratory logs for all tests performed in the clinic, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Perform or assist with point-of-care waived laboratory tests, including but not limited to venipunctures, finger-sticks, pregnancy tests, urine dipsticks, electrocardiograms (EKGs), Pap smear preparation, Hepatitis C screening, HIV screening, COVID screening, and preparation of routine cultures.
• Handle incoming phone calls and manage emails in a professional and timely manner to support patient access and continuity of care.
• Facilitate communication between patients and healthcare providers, including relaying messages, clarifying instructions, and coordinating follow-up care.
• Follow up with patients regarding test results, referrals, and other healthcare instructions, ensuring patients receive clear guidance and next steps.
• Support a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment by following infection control and clinic procedures.
• Multitask effectively to manage clinical, administrative, and organizational duties in a fast-paced outpatient setting.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall operations and mission of the health center.

Essential Skills

• High School Diploma or GED certificate.
• Minimum of one (1) year of related experience and/or training in a medical assistant or similar clinical support role.
• Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred, demonstrating formal training and competency in medical assisting.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced outpatient environment.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and basic pharmacology sufficient to support clinical care and documentation.
• Knowledge of laboratory procedures and other clinical procedures commonly performed in an outpatient setting.
• Proficiency in collecting and documenting patient medical history, vital signs, and medication lists accurately.
• Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems or the ability to quickly learn and use EHR technology.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Excellent emotional coping skills, including the ability to handle difficult emotional situations and respond appropriately to the emotional needs of others.
• Demonstrated commitment to high-quality customer service and patient-centered care.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive patient information with professionalism and discretion.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Technical experience with phlebotomy and venipuncture is a plus and enhances the ability to perform point-of-care tests.
• Familiarity with point-of-care waived tests such as venipunctures, finger-sticks, pregnancy tests, urine dipsticks, electrocardiograms, Pap smear preparation, Hepatitis C screening, HIV screening, COVID screening, and routine culture preparation.
• Experience working in an outpatient clinic or community health setting is beneficial.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing laboratory logs, documentation, and follow-up tasks.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team and adapt to changing clinical needs.
• Customer service experience in a healthcare environment, with a demonstrated ability to meet or exceed established customer service standards.

Work Environment

This position is based in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that provides primary healthcare, dental, and mental health services to children and adults in a community-focused setting, with particular attention to individuals living in or near public housing. The work environment is fast-paced and patient-centered, requiring frequent interaction with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The role involves both clinical and administrative duties in an outpatient setting, including use of electronic health record (EHR) systems, point-of-care testing equipment, and standard medical office tools. The schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a requirement to stay later on some Tuesdays and Thursdays, potentially until 8:00 p.m., to support extended clinic hours. The clinic emphasizes professionalism, teamwork, and high customer service standards while maintaining a safe, organized, and supportive environment for both patients and staff

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Greenwich, CT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.85/hr.
