Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for obtaining an accurate and comprehensive list of a patients medication regimen upon admission, while in the Emergency Department or prior to planned surgery in conjunction with the patient, family, pharmacies and other health care personnel.

Nature and Scope:

The incumbent is expected to provide optimal patient care by recognizing differences in drug therapy (i.e., drug, dose, frequency) in pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. The incumbent is challenged to assist the physician, nurse, and pharmacist in the timely and accurate development of an accurate home medication list.

Questions involving medication use or therapeutics must be referred to the pharmacist, and good judgment is required when other types of information is provided by the technician. The incumbent is responsible for interviewing the patient and utilizing other resources available (i.e., outpatient pharmacies, family, etc.) to obtain a list of home medications, over-the-counter products, and supplements that the patient is currently taking.

Responsibilities:

  • Entering medication orders into the pharmacy computer system
  • Maintaining and updating the patient medication reconciliation profile
  • Referring all therapeutic questions to the pharmacist

Professional Expectations:

The incumbent is expected to act in a professional manner and to provide exceptional patient service as directed by the Renown Service fundamental. The incumbent is challenged to assist in the training of new technicians, pharmacy students, pharmacy practice residents, and nursing staff in medication reconciliation.

Work Schedule:

The incumbent will be required to work varying shifts and days to meet the needs of the department, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (Cost Center 200 only). Overtime may be required. The incumbent is expected to attend on a regular basis staff meetings, technician meetings, etc.

Training and Knowledge:

In addition to being competent to work in the inpatient and outpatient environments, the incumbent is expected to be trained and have the ability to work in multiple areas. This position must maintain general pharmacy knowledge, knowledge of medications, medication dosage forms, pharmaceutical calculations, and trade and generic names.

Interpersonal Skills:

The incumbent demonstrates interpersonal skills to maintain effective communication with co-workers, other hospital employees, patients, and visitors. Working knowledge of Renown Health and specific departmental policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws regarding pharmacy, is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements

  • Required and/or Preferred Education:

  • Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.

  • Prefer high School Diploma, (or equivalent), proficient math skills.

  • Experience:

  • One year of retail or two years of hospital experience as a Pharmacy Technician is required.

  • Experience in a customer service role is preferred.

  • License(s):

  • Registered by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Recognized Pharmacy Technician training program, and/or are nationally certified (CPhT) preferred.

  • Certification(s):

  • Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program or have national certification preferred.

  • Computer / Typing:

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.

  • Typing: 30 wpm.
