The Chemours Steam Facility in Penn's Grove, New Jersey, provides critical process steam to the Chemours facility. The plant features two dual-fuel auxiliary/package boilers with a steam flow rating of 60,000 to 82,500 lbs/hr, fired on natural gas and fuel oil, with a third rented boiler ensuring winter reliability. Operations include water treatment, high-voltage switchgear monitoring, fuel oil system operation, and steam system management, with the facility running year-round under annual renewal contracts.
Opportunity Summary
The Mechanical Maintenance Technician plays a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Chemours Steam Facility in Penns Grove, New Jersey. This position performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on plant mechanical equipment and systems that support continuous steam generation and distribution. Utilizing CMMS tools, troubleshooting expertise, and strong mechanical skills, the technician helps maintain equipment reliability and plant availability while supporting safe work practices and operational excellence.
Your scope of responsibility as Mechanical Maintenance Technician includes the following primary functions:
- Participate in the plant's preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs by performing scheduled maintenance activities, utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and documenting work activities to support equipment reliability and operational performance.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical equipment issues to minimize downtime and maintain safe, efficient plant operation.
- Inspect, maintain, repair, and overhaul plant mechanical equipment associated with steam generation and distribution, including boilers and boiler auxiliaries, pumps, valves, fans, blowers, heat exchangers, piping systems, fuel oil equipment, feedwater systems, condensate systems, pressure relief devices, and steam distribution components.
- Support boiler outages, planned maintenance activities, and emergency repairs by performing equipment inspections, identifying deficiencies, and executing repairs safely and efficiently.
- Perform precision maintenance activities including equipment alignment, bearing replacement, mechanical seal replacement, lubrication, vibration troubleshooting, and mechanical inspections to maximize equipment performance and reliability.
- Perform pipefitting, rigging, fabrication, and the installation, modification, and repair of piping systems, valves, supports, and associated mechanical equipment to support maintenance, repair, and plant improvement projects.
- Read and interpret equipment drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), technical manuals, and maintenance procedures to safely perform assigned work.
- Perform routine equipment inspections and support the maintenance of dual-fuel boiler systems, fuel oil handling equipment, boiler feedwater equipment, condensate return systems, water treatment support equipment, and other balance-of-plant mechanical systems, identifying abnormal conditions and recommending corrective actions.
- Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to coordinate maintenance activities, support troubleshooting efforts, and improve overall plant performance, reliability, and safety.
- Assist in developing and improving maintenance procedures, job plans, and reliability-centered maintenance practices to enhance equipment availability and reduce maintenance costs.
- Maintain maintenance records, equipment histories, spare parts inventories, and technical documentation to ensure accurate tracking of plant assets and maintenance activities.
- Coordinate and oversee contractors and outside service providers to ensure maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plant standards, procedures, and quality expectations.
- Adhere to all environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements while actively promoting a strong safety culture and participating in plant safety initiatives.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Plant Manager, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to plant operations.

Working Relationships
The Mechanical Maintenance Technician reports directly to the Maintenance Manager and receives general direction from other plant management. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods of time; climbing stairs, ladders, and elevated structures; working from platforms and walkways at varying heights; kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching; performing work in confined or difficult-to-access areas; and routinely lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
Work is performed in an industrial steam plant environment and may require exposure to rotating equipment, pressurized systems, hot surfaces, steam, chemicals, noise, vibration, and varying indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
Required personal protective equipment (PPE) may include hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), fall protection equipment, respirators, chemical-resistant clothing, and other protective equipment as required by job duties and site safety procedures. Respirator medical evaluations and fit testing may be required. Compliance with all facility safety policies, including smoking restrictions, is required.
Fitness for Duty
All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.
Compensation
This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $40 to $46 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
Core Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for a skilled Technician with experience in power generation operations and maintenance, coupled with a proven ability to contribute effectively to team success and consistently meet performance standards.
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Process Technology, Power Plant Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred. Equivalent military training, technical certifications, or relevant industrial maintenance experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Must currently possess and maintain, at a minimum, a valid State of New Jersey Black Seal High-Pressure Boiler Operator License.
- Mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial facility, power plant, steam plant, refinery, chemical plant, manufacturing facility, or similar heavy industrial environment.
- Working knowledge of steam-generating equipment and balance-of-plant systems, including boilers, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, piping systems, fuel oil equipment, feedwater systems, condensate systems, and auxiliary mechanical equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and overhaul mechanical equipment using sound mechanical principles and established maintenance practices.
- Experience performing precision maintenance activities, including equipment alignment, bearing replacement, mechanical seal replacement, lubrication, rigging, and vibration-related troubleshooting.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment manuals, specifications, and maintenance procedures.
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work order management, equipment history tracking, preventive maintenance scheduling, and maintenance documentation.
- Strong commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and safe work practices, including experience working under lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and other industrial safety procedures.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with operations personnel, contractors, and other maintenance team members to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
