Position Description

The Mechanical/Electrical Maintenance Specialist will work as a Central Plant Operator for the team playing an essential role in maintaining and optimizing the performance of Applied Medical’s utility and facility systems. This position supports the operation and reliability of boilers, chillers, pumps, turbines, generators and other central plant equipment that enable critical manufacturing and research operations. The Mechanical/Electrical Maintenance Specialist ensures the consistent operation of complex electro-mechanical systems across Applied Medical’s facilities, contributing directly to operational excellence and innovation in medical device manufacturing and development. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Monitor, inspect, and maintain central utility systems, including boilers, chillers, air compressors, pumps, generators, turbines and other related equipment. 
  • Operate and adjust mechanical and electrical systems to maintain temperature, humidity, and air quality within manufacturing and laboratory environments. 
  • Diagnose and resolve performance issues using electrical and mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control logic. 
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure optimal performance and system reliability. 
  • Adhere to safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and environmental standards related to emissions, waste handling, and fuel usage. 
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and facilities personnel to troubleshoot issues, implement upgrades, and improve system performance. 
  • Maintain detailed maintenance documentation and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency. 

 

Success in This Role Looks Like 

  • Sustaining consistent uptime and reliability of central utility and HVAC systems supporting production and research facilities. 
  • Quickly identifying and resolving electrical and mechanical issues to minimize unplanned downtime. 
  • Demonstrating strong technical understanding of building systems and facility operations. 
  • Maintaining a proactive approach to safety, preventive maintenance, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Partnering effectively with engineering and operations teams to support system upgrades and continuous improvement projects. 
  • Contributing to a collaborative team culture that values technical excellence, innovation, and accountability. 
  • Suggesting improvements in all areas related to the Central Plant Operations Team including safety, operational, efficiency, team time management and other.

Position Requirements

This position requires the following skills and attributes: 

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control logic. 
  • Two to three years of experience in central plant operations, facilities maintenance, or a comparable electro-mechanical role. 
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across both electrical and mechanical systems with the ability to make data-driven maintenance decisions. 
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and automated control systems. 
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, energy management, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Preferred

The following skills and attributes are preferred: 

  • Hands-on experience with boilers, chillers, air compressors, and other central plant equipment. 
  • Understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), instrumentation, and automated control systems. 
  • Experience in system commissioning, retrofits, or upgrades. 
  • Background in medical device manufacturing, utilities operations, or other regulated industries. 
  • Training or certification in Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
