Job Title: Mechanical Designer

Job Description

This role focuses on designing and developing innovative HVAC systems that prioritize sustainability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. You will use your mechanical engineering expertise and 3D modeling skills to create complex assemblies, select appropriate components, and optimize refrigeration cycles for performance and reliability. Working closely with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders, you will help drive new product development while ensuring compliance with industry standards and emerging technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop HVAC systems with a strong emphasis on sustainability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Create detailed mechanical designs and 3D models for HVAC equipment, including complex assemblies with many parts.
  • Select appropriate components such as fans, heat exchangers, compressors, coils, and valves to meet design specifications and performance requirements.
  • Analyze refrigeration cycle performance to ensure optimal efficiency, reliability, and system optimization.
  • Review and interpret electrical diagrams and control systems to ensure proper integration with mechanical designs.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and regulations to ensure designs are innovative, compliant, and aligned with best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with clients and internal stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions that meet or exceed expectations.
  • Participate in product testing activities to validate design performance and support continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to new product development projects from concept through completion, applying project management and mechanical design skills.
  • Support equipment design activities for HVAC systems within a manufacturing environment, including design for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and refinement of designs based on testing results and field feedback.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in HVAC system design and engineering.
  • Strong background in HVAC and mechanical design, ideally with equipment design in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient 3D modeling skills, with experience in complex assemblies involving many parts.
  • Experience with mechanical design tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Profound understanding of the refrigeration cycle, component functionality, and system performance optimization.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and control systems.
  • Familiarity with various types of compressors, fans, heat exchangers, coils, and valves used in HVAC systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead projects from concept to completion.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities for effective collaboration with clients and internal teams.
  • Experience working in the HVAC industry within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in equipment design and new product development for HVAC systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • General knowledge of CAD tools and workflows beyond core platforms.
  • Experience in large commercial, chiller, or industrial refrigeration design.
  • Hands-on experience with product testing and troubleshooting of HVAC equipment.
  • Experience with parts specification and generation of parts lists or bills of materials.
  • background in sheet metal design for mechanical components.
  • Exposure to project management practices within engineering or product development.
  • Interest in staying current with emerging HVAC technologies and sustainability-focused design approaches.

Work Environment

You will join a dedicated design team of approximately 20 engineers within a larger engineering organization of about 70-80 professionals at a Virginia-based plant. The environment is highly collaborative and growth-oriented, with significant expansion and new facilities being added globally, creating strong opportunities for advancement and professional development. You will work closely with other mechanical, HVAC, and product engineers, leveraging tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and other CAD systems to design and develop HVAC equipment. The setting combines office-based design work with interaction in a manufacturing-oriented facility, supporting new product development, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
