Oxford Solutions is working with a client seeking a Mechanical Commissioning Specialist for a 6-month contract opportunity in Buffalo, NY. This role will support an active data center project that is already in progress, with additional resources being added to support the commissioning team. Target start date is end of June.
This is a field-based technical role supporting programmatic commissioning throughout the project lifecycle. While testing is a key part of commissioning, this role will also support quality management, documentation review, vendor checkout, field verification, and issue tracking before construction is complete.
This is not a supervisory role. The Mechanical Commissioning Specialist will work independently on assigned scopes while collaborating with the project team and communicating field conditions, deficiencies, and progress to the Mechanical Lead.
Schedule and Travel
This is a 6-month contract based in Buffalo, NY. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule, averaging about 50 hours per week, with travel home on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings as needed. The commissioning team typically works on a 2-week field rotation followed by 1 week at home. Candidates should be comfortable with up to 65% travel and occasional extended hours, nights, or weekends during critical testing milestones and owner acceptance events.
Responsibilities
Support mechanical commissioning activities for an active data center project
Review project deliverables, commissioning documentation, and field records for completeness and accuracy
Assist with quality management activities throughout design, construction, vendor checkout, and testing phases
Perform field verification of mechanical systems, equipment, and installation conditions
Support inspection, startup, functional testing, and validation of mechanical systems
Identify, document, and communicate deficiencies, open items, and field issues
Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and project team members during checkout and commissioning activities
Provide daily updates to the Mechanical Lead regarding assigned scopes, progress, and issues
Assist with troubleshooting and resolution of mechanical system issues
Follow site safety requirements, work practices, and commissioning procedures
Support owner acceptance activities and critical testing milestones as needed
Maintain organized commissioning records, checklists, deficiency logs, and closeout documentation
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or another technical field preferred
Vocational/trade certification or equivalent hands-on technical experience will also be considered
6+ years of relevant technical experience
Experience may include mechanical commissioning, startup, field operations, maintenance, mechanical systems, equipment checkout, quality management, or technical field work
Background in data centers, critical infrastructure, power generation, industrial manufacturing or comparable environments preferred
Direct commissioning experience is preferred but not required
Experience supporting commissioning during design, construction, vendor checkout, and testing phases is a plus
Military technical backgrounds are strongly transferable, including Navy nuclear MMN/EMN/ETN, Army 91-series, Air Force 3E0X2, Marine 1141, Coast Guard EM/MK, or similar technical experience
Valid driver’s license required
NFPA 70E Qualified Electrical Worker required or ability to complete during onboarding
OSHA 10 Construction certification required or ability to complete during onboarding
CxT, BCxP, Journeyman license, or manufacturer startup training is preferred
