JOB TITLE Mechanic DEPARTMENT City Garage CITY Non-Exempt FULL TIME YES GRADE 16.02

JOB SUMMARY

The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Director of the City Garage. Performs semi-skilled and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment for the City of Jackson.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Provide preventive maintenance for all vehicles and mechanical equipment. • Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand electric and air-driven tools. • Test service and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment. • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. • Repair brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, and hydraulic transmissions, ignitions, air exhaust axle assemblies, and related systems. • Change and repair tires and tubes. • Evaluate the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles and perform needed repairs. • Conduct various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective maintenance, repair, or replacement. • Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate. • Must be able to perform clerical duties using Excel and Microsoft Word. • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

TOOLSEQUIPMENT

• Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes • Power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work • Mechanics tools, including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles • Electronic vehicles diagnostic equipment • Personal computer, calculator, phone, mobile, or portable radio

REQUIRED EDUCATION DEGREES CERTIFICATES AND OR LICENSE

High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field. Three years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Drivers License.

EXPERIENCE TRAINING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL

• Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics • Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps, valves, and generators • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment
