Position: Mechanic Assistant

Campus: Transportation

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Immediate Supervisor: Shop Foreman and Shop Business Manager

Pay Grade: Per Compensation Manual

Days Employed: Per Compensation Manual

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Assist shop personnel in keeping all district vehicles operating in a safe and economically acceptable manner to contribute to the educational process of students
  • Maintain the interior and exterior of the transportation fleet

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must have an acceptable driving record
  • Must be able to pass the Texas Department of Public Safety physical, including drug and alcohol screening
  • Have an acceptable criminal history check

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with "P" and "S" endorsement
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply and divide by 10s and 100s
  • Ability to perform operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to complete detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform scheduled oil changes and lubrications on all district vehicles
  • Complete hood checks on all vehicles
  • Help maintain the work area in a clean and orderly manner
  • Do pre-trip preparation on all buses scheduled for out-of-district trips
  • Change out the headlamp, brake lamp, clearance lamp, interior lamp, and parking lamp bulbs as needed
  • Attend selected mechanic''s schools as requested
  • Clean the exterior and interior of the transportation fleet
  • Assist in stocking parts
  • Act as a runner when needed to take parts and/or buses to be repaired and pick up repair parts and/or buses
  • Notify the mechanic when a potential problem is spotted during the inspection
  • Check the tire pressure of the bus tire weekly
  • Do all necessary seat repairs
  • Clean and disinfect the interior of buses as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Obtain forklift certification
  • Ability to prioritize work orders
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn how to operate a tire machine and wheel balancer
  • Substitute as a bus driver

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear
  • Required to reach with hands and arm, required to sit, frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward
  • Continually use hand strength to grasp tools, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as bus parts and chemical containers
  • Specific vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Regularly work near moving mechanical buses and equipment
  • Frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gas fumes and sprays
  • Occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles
  • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally loud
