Main Purpose of Job
To manage daily law enforcement operations, oversee department bureaus, and supervise offices to protect state-owned facilities, government leaders, state workers, and visitors. This position supervises the rank of Captains, who command Detachments/Divisions, and lieutenants, who command specialized Sections reporting directly to Headquarters. The position reports directly to the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police and is third in command. The position can assume overall command of the department in the Chief''s and Deputy Chiefâs absence.
POSITION DUTIES
We seek a highly skilled and experienced leader to join our team as an executive management member in law enforcement. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, visionary leader, and effective communicator with a proven track record of managing and overseeing law enforcement operations at an executive level.
Duties include, but are not limited to:Â
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:Â Graduation from an accredited high school or a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education, as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Experience:Â 10 years of professional experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.Â

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Candidates must have a valid driver''s license and a good driving record. The driving record will be verified during the background check process to confirm eligibility for hire.
Police Certification issued by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission within six months of employment. Â
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

· Must be at least 21 years of age
· Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history and internal affairs
· Oral interview
· One on one interview with the Chief of Police
· Physical examination
· Possession of a driver''s license valid in the State of Maryland

Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical
knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms, periodically as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing per Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
Must meet the physical fitness standards required for law enforcement officers, including passing a physical fitness test

The examination for this position will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED. The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended. The list will be used by the hiring authority to select employees for interviews.  Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.
Please note that selected candidates may be required to complete and successfully pass a State and Federal fingerprint background check prior to being hired.
