Description

Trident Seafoods is the largest vertically integrated seafood harvesting and processing company in North America. Trident's global operations produce finished wild Alaska seafood products in 6 countries and its sales teams serve customers in over 50 countries. Species harvested and processed by Trident include virtually every commercial species of salmon, whitefish, and crab harvested in the North Pacific and Alaska. The global supply chain also includes cultured and wild species from a network of trusted sources worldwide.

Overall in command of the vessel. Directs and oversees the activities of the vessel senior crew; including deck, engineering, production and safety. Responsible for all navigation and primary vessel activity which can include fishing, processing or hauling freight. Works direct with the Corporate or fleet manager to plan and implement vessel movements and operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Directs and oversees the pre-season and day to day operations of the vessel. Responsible for operating the vessel in accordance with local, state and federal laws and regulations. Also, in compliance with Trident policy.
  • Works with Corp. Manager and Chief Engineer to lead, manage and direct capital projects (e.g. drydocking, installation and repair projects, major purchases) including the scheduling, budgeting and compliance with license, permit and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Oversees and establishes the performance and operation standards for all vessel deck and navigation systems. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Directs and oversees required documentation for the primary vessel functions.
  • Analyzes and leverages human resource needs to assist with short- and long-term projects.
  • Confers with management and production staff to determine engineering feasibility and cost effectiveness of present or future projects.
  • Oversees the design and implementation of training to ensure that all vessel deck and engineering staff are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or regulatory certification requirements.
  • Provides direction and example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities.
  • Analyzes and maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations and develops recommendations accordingly.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements: Must hold valid USCG Master License (5000GRT) with OICNW &RFPNW.

Education:

Extensive seafood of related industry experience preferred; Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Processing Vessels:

  • Three years as captain of a processing vessel in the fishery being applied for.
  • Three years as a Mate on a similar sized vessel.
  • Advanced firefighting skills
  • Clean vessel safety record.
  • Clear criminal background check.
  • Familiarity of all state and federal requirements/regulations for the fishery being applied for.
  • Familiarity with pollution abatement procedures.
  • Basic HR awareness and training.
  • Familiarity with navigation in Alaska. Local knowledge.
  • Familiarity with production needs and willingness to work with vessel manager and Chief Engineer to support production.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations that apply to the vessel being applied for.
  • Ability to manage the medical/first aid needs of the vessel. Able to work/communicate the with Corporate Claims and HR departments to monitor crew needs/issues.
  • Able to manage vessel safety programs and take responsibility for keeping the vessel shipshape.
  • Oversee training of the deck crews and encourage deck crews to learn more skills or to work towards a Coast Guard license.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Appropriate licenses/permits of trade (e.g., CG license of appropriate tonnage. STCW endorsement, etc.) when required.
  • Current First Aid and CPR cards.

Special Training/Skills (Language):

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and peripheral vision.

Mental Activities:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to Read, speak, write and understand English and use customer service skills. The employee is frequently required to utilize interpersonal, teamwork, decision making skills, creativity, independent judgment, discretion, problem analysis, and supervision skills.
