Job Summary and Qualifications

This position is a Manager of Software Development position who will report directly to the Senior Director of Software Architecture, Clinical Development & Innovation. This candidate will have strong experience in leading software development teams. The ideal candidate will possess a strong development background as well as design and architectural experience. In addition, this candidate will also be expected to establish and drive adoption of best practices for architectural and coding patterns, DevOps practices and framework usage. This candidate will have a track record of leadership of successful projects in a fast-paced, mixed team (consultant and employee) environment. 

The primary purpose of the position is to provide technical leadership and expertise for developing and supporting new and existing software products within Clinical Development & Innovation at HCA. This position requires a candidate who can lead and oversee the design, construction, testing, and implementation of solutions in an Agile Development environment. The candidate must be a highly motivated self-starter and must be committed to delivering high quality solutions within agreed upon timelines. Ultimately, the candidate’s success will be evaluated by the performance advances the entire Clinical Development team is able to achieve on a consistent basis. The following are highlighted competencies and core expectations for the job/role: 

  • Lead the software development lifecycle process for selected projects that are designed to stabilize, enhance, and/or expand capabilities related to the Clinical Development & Innovation team. 
  • Ensure the full and proper application of technology to all department functions 
  • Serve as the Development Manager for Clinical Development & Innovation 
  • o Partner with the Product Manager and Business Owners to develop and support clinical products according to business priority while adhering to HCA processes and governance. 
  • o Lead the technical team in establishing, following, and improving agile development processes 
  • o Coordinate with other technical teams at HCA on necessary activities 
  • o Remove team roadblocks 
  • Manage a team of developers supporting one or more software products 
  • o People management – Staff meetings, Resource Allocation Management, Performance Reviews, Time Management, PTO, Employee Development Planning, Mentoring 
  • Manage processes for ongoing application support by ensuring tickets are assigned to team members appropriately and completed in a manner that meets or exceeds pre-defined service level agreements 
  • In cooperation with HCA Architects, evaluate all proposed new technology for the departmental use and organizational fit 
  • Collaborate with Corporate and Division leadership, Client Executives, Clients and PMs to schedule, staff and deliver application enhancements 
  • Identify potential revenue-generating solutions and perform patent evaluations and feasibility analysis where applicable 
  • Assist the Director of Clinical Development and other designees in developing a catalog of service offerings along with associated costs 

General Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage development projects thru inception, elaboration, development, testing, and implementation. 
  • Ensure staff are completing Unit Testing and participating in Peer/Code Reviews of other developers’ work 
  • Ensure staff are providing advanced troubleshooting user support working with end users at all levels of the organization 
  • Ensure baseline key performance indicators are established as well as relevant operating metrics can be gathered in order to evaluate before/after results related to new technology adoption 
  • Identify and acquire technologies along with all supporting managerial tasks (e.g.- contract management, requisitioning, invoice payments) 
  • Lead team members to successfully execute development initiatives using Agile practices and principles 
  • Collaborate with architects and developers to develop robust, secure data integrations with other HCA or vendor systems 
  • Collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and development team on product architecture and technical design 
  • Provide technical leadership in large-scale development projects involving multiple areas outside of core team 
  • Collaborate with other technical teams across HCA ITG 
  • Coach team on existing system structure, constraints and deficiencies with product 
  • Provides leadership in the deployment, change, configuration, management, administration and maintenance of deployment process and systems 
  • Focuses on customer satisfaction 
  • Works in an environment with rapidly changing business requirements and priorities 
  • Demonstrates deep understanding and acts as a leader in the team’s continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines and infrastructure pipelines 
What qualifications you will need:
  • Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Seven or more years of relevant work experience
  • One or more years of management experience

Other/Special Qualifications

  • Demonstration of and belief in the Agile mindset 
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure preferred 
  • Experience with Microservice architectures preferred 
  • Experience with modern web application development preferred 
  • Experience with iOS and Android mobile development platforms preferred 
  • Experience with CI/CD code and infrastructure pipeline deployment strongly preferred 
  • 7+ years combined experience in management, architecting, and engineering software products required • Delivery of past software systems with documented value required 
  • Strong focus on delivering customer value required 
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analysis, and problem-solving abilities required 
  • Ability to engineer and build software through multiple languages and tools required 
  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to work with staff and business required 
  • Willingness to learn our business domain required
