The Manager of Perioperative Operations is responsible for supporting operational performance, patient flow, and process improvement across the perioperative continuum, including Pre-Admission Testing (PAT), Pre-Op, Operating Room (OR), PACU, and related services.
This role focuses on improving first case on-time starts, optimizing throughput, reducing delays, and supporting consistent, efficient daily operations. The position collaborates with nursing leadership, anesthesia, and surgical teams to align workflows, improve performance, and promote high-quality, patient-centered care.
This position also serves as the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) for surgical services.
Key Responsibilities
Perioperative Operations
- Monitor and support daily surgical flow across perioperative areas
- Identify and address barriers impacting case progression and patient throughput
- Facilitate communication across departments to support alignment with the surgical schedule
- Support daily operational huddles, including afternoon throughput handoff
First Case On-Time Start Optimization
- Partner with Surgical Services leadership to improve first case readiness
- Identify causes of delays and implement corrective actions
- Support standardization of processes to improve consistency
Throughput & Process Improvement
- Analyze perioperative workflows to identify inefficiencies and variation
- Lead and support performance improvement initiatives (e.g., turnover performance, add-on integration, discharge flow)
- Develop and implement standardized processes to support efficient operations
- Collaborate with leadership to sustain improvements
Data & Performance Management
Monitor key perioperative performance indicators, including:
First case on-time starts
Turnover times
OR utilization
Delays and cancellations
Identify trends and opportunities for improvement
Prepare and present performance summaries to leadership
Utilize available reporting tools and collaborate with internal resources as needed
Late-Day Operational Support (OR-Focused)
- Provide support to OR leadership and charge nurses for late-day operations as needed
- Assist with add-on coordination, turnover optimization, and resource alignment
- Support escalation of complex operational issues when onsite
Cross-Department Coordination
- Align Pre-Op readiness with OR scheduling
- Coordinate with PACU to support patient throughput and reduce delays
- Collaborate with SPD regarding instrumentation and equipment readiness
- Support coordination between nursing, anesthesia, and surgical teams
Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Responsibilities
- Serve as the designated Laser Safety Officer for surgical services
- Ensure compliance with applicable laser safety standards and regulations
- Maintain and update laser safety policies and procedures
- Coordinate staff training and competency validation
- Participate in safety rounds, audits, and incident review processes
- Collaborate with biomedical engineering and vendors as needed
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred
Licensure/Certification
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State required
- CNOR certification preferred
Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of perioperative nursing experience required
- Experience across multiple perioperative areas preferred
- Experience with process improvement or performance initiatives preferred

- Ability to analyze operational processes and identify improvement opportunities

Work Schedule
- Primary schedule: Monday-Friday, 0700-1530
- Flexibility required based on operational needs, including occasional extended hours
Working Conditions
- Clinical and office-based environment within surgical services
- Requires frequent interaction with clinical staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams
- May require periods of prolonged standing, walking, and computer use
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the department for extended periods
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds occasionally
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for communication and monitoring activities
