This is your chance to lead the engine of a food rescue operation that feeds thousands of families every week. We're looking for a sharp, driven leader who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and wants their work to matter every single day. If that's you, we'd love to meet you.
About Urban Gleaners
Nearly 40% of food in the U.S. is wasted while more than one in four children in Oregon lack consistent access to healthy food. The solution is simple: rescue good food and get it to the people who need it most. That's exactly what Urban Gleaners has done for two decades across Multnomah and Washington Counties.
Each week we bring fresh food directly to over 8,500 people across 42 delivery sites, with no paperwork and no proof of need required. We're also a powerful force for the environment. We've rescued more than 12 million pounds of food that would otherwise have rotted in landfills, releasing harmful methane gas. We're an independent 501(c)(3) with a small, passionate team and an annual budget of $1.3 million.
Position Summary
The Manager of Food Access & Operations owns the full arc of our food rescue work, from sourcing and receiving donated food, to warehouse operations and food safety, to getting food out to the families we serve. You'll also be a primary leader for our staff team. This is the connective tissue of our organization: deeply operational, community facing, and driven by mission.
What You'll Do
- Food sourcing & donor relationships: Manage inventory and food streams across all programs, grow and steward donor relationships for donated food, and oversee the safety and compliance of all incoming food.
- Warehouse operations: Run daily warehouse operations, enforce food safety and OSHA standards, maintain equipment and vehicles, and continuously improve systems and efficiency.
- Food distribution & access partnerships: Coordinate logistics with Free Food Market partners, manage and grow the network of access partners we rely on to reach families, and open new sites through community outreach.
- Team leadership: Supervise, mentor, and schedule staff; support and deploy volunteers; and model a culture of equity, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
What You Bring
- At least two years in operations and/or program management, ideally drawing on both skill sets
- Experience in food systems, food rescue, hunger relief, or a related nonprofit environment (strongly preferred)
- Strong project and change management skills, with a track record of prioritizing and delegating work under tight deadlines
- Experience supervising staff and managing volunteer programs with a diverse population
- Comfort with database management, Google Calendar, and Microsoft Office, plus a willingness to learn new tools
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day
- Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to safely operate our vans
- Familiarity with hunger and food insecurity in the Portland Metro area; bilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $67,000 to $74,000 annual salary
- Hours: Full time, 32 hours per week
- Health Benefits: Fully paid health and dental benefits
- PTO: Competitive PTO package
- Cell Phone Stipend: Monthly cell phone stipend
