PURPOSE:

The Manager of Environmental Services is responsible for the overall leadership, planning, and execution of custodial and environmental services operations across campus facilities. This role ensures all buildings are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition that supports students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The position oversees staff, budgets, equipment, and service standards while driving efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations Management

  • Oversee daily custodial operations across all assigned campus facilities.
  • Develop and implement cleaning schedules, task assignments, and service standards.
  • Ensure all areas meet cleanliness, sanitation, and safety expectations.
  • Conduct routine inspections and quality assurance checks.
  • Coordinate special projects such as floor care, deep cleaning, and event setups.

Staff Leadership & Supervision

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate environmental services staff.
  • Manage shift coverage (day and evening operations) and staffing levels.
  • Establish performance expectations and accountability standards.
  • Provide coaching, discipline, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets.
  • Monitor labor, supplies, and equipment costs.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities without sacrificing quality.
  • Oversee procurement of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory control and vendor relationships.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and institutional safety standards.
  • Implement proper chemical handling, storage, and usage procedures.
  • Maintain SDS documentation and staff training records.
  • Promote a culture of safety and risk reduction

Equipment & Facilities Oversight

  • Manage custodial equipment lifecycle (purchase, maintenance, replacement).
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies (auto scrubbers, robotics, etc.).
  • Coordinate with Facilities, Maintenance, and Capital Projects teams.
  • Support building readiness for academic schedules and campus events.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Serve as primary point of contact for custodial service requests.
  • Respond to complaints and resolve issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to align service expectations.
  • Provide regular updates and reporting to leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of custodial or environmental services experience.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience managing budgets and staff schedules.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in higher education, healthcare, or large-scale facilities.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment and modern cleaning technologies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Prolonged standing and walking across campus facilities for inspections and operational support.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs, including equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching (overhead and below waist).
  • Operation of custodial equipment and carts, including pushing/pulling loaded equipment.
  • Combination of field and office work, including extended periods sitting, computer use, and administrative tasks.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and varying indoor/outdoor environmental conditions.
