    Overview:

    JOB SUMMARY:  Nurse Manager ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care for the Medical/Surgical unit. The Manager is responsible 24 hours a day, with full accountability for the staffing and management of patient care, for providing professional nursing services in specified patient care areas, and the acquisition, development and utilization of resources including human, material and fiscal needed to meet those responsibilities. Coordinate scheduling of hospital nursing staff according to patient census and acuity. Handle the clerical and administrative management of the unit. Act as a creative leader combining nursing expertise, critical thinking and effective leadership and management skills to ensure that quality care is provided through satisfied and inspired professionals.  Collaborate with Nurse Directors, hospital staff and physicians to achieve goals. Maintain accountability to County, State and Federal agencies as well as The Joint Commission for compliance with applicable laws, regulations and standards and for providing quality patient outcomes.

     

     

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

    1.   Registered Nurse licensed in the State of California with no restrictions, no actions and not on probation.
    2.   BS degree in Nursing or other healthcare-related  field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    3.   Certification in specialty area preferred.
    4.   MS degree in Healthcare -related field preferred.
    5.   Clinical expertise in medical/surgical nursing that is normally acquired through five years of experience as staff nurse and/or charge nurse.  Five years of progressive nursing administration experience

    required.  Three years recent RN acute care experience.

     

    1.   High level critical thinking and analytical skills to make management decisions at unit level and make recommendations for consideration on departmental issues.
    2.   Interpersonal and management skills and knowledge of employee relation laws in order to deal with

    complex management problems and communicate with unit personnel, physicians, administrative personnel, a variety  of other hospital  personnel and community persons.

    1.   Organizational skills, effective time management and delegation strategies including the ability to rapidly prioritize and adjust work flow according to changing unit needs.
    2.   Well-developed skills in using computers.
    3. Experience in training and teaching others.
    4. Ability to be physically active,  including seeing,  hearing,  speaking, sitting,  standing,  bending,                               squatting, twisting,  pushing, pulling,  lifting
    Responsibilities:

    Manage the delivery of nursing services in a hospital unit.

    Continually analyze  and  enhance patient  care  and  services  to  meet  and  exceed  the needs  and expectations of the customer.

    Monitor quality and appropriateness of patient care.

    Project and coordinate sufficient staffing to meet patient care needs.

    Utilize sound judgment and critical thinking skills in making decisions related to patient care and employee issues.

    Manage personnel resources and adjust to changing workload, staff absence and other needs within parameters of staffing targets.

    Develop,  review,  revise   and  implement  policies   and  procedures which  relate  to  the particular  nursing  specialty  and  integrate standards of care  into  unit operations/collaborative care paths that support  the provision of services.

    Supervise the nursing staff in the delivery of patient care.

    Select qualified and competent employees.

    Conduct   hiring,   disciplinary action,   scheduling, orientation, performance appraisals, educational needs and conflict resolution.

    Establish performance expectations and provide coaching to achieve positive results.

    Communicate with staff and keep staff current with appropriate information through staff meetings and announcements.

    Foster teamwork, effective communication and collaboration among all departments.

    Promote the practice of professional nursing by mentoring unit nurses in the development of patient care skills and leadership skills.

    Anticipate the purchase of replacement of equipment with input from staff and physicians.

    Implement the equipment purchase process.

    Anticipate and recommend needs for added space and needed services not provided by the organization.

    Develop annual departmental budget objectives.

    Monitor and ensure compliance with the department budget.

    Actively seek out self-development and education opportunities.

    Performs other duties as assigned.
