JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for performing all mammography and radiographic procedures independently.  Will exercise judgment and initiative to produce high quality images, using proper anatomical positioning, technique and radiation safety practices.  Flexible in abilities to perform independently at off-site clinics. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience.  Recognizes and demonstrates understanding of patient and family centered care. 

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Produces images of high diagnostic quality for all mammographic procedures including: ductograms, implants, and needle localizations.  Performs bone density examinations as needed.  Selects proper technical factors and positions patient accurately critiquing completed images, following exam through to a taken status and maintaining a repeat rate at or below the national standard.
2. Assists in the performance of all Quality Assurance (QA) and Control duties as it relates to mammography in accordance to the American College of Radiology (ACR), Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) rules and regulations. 
3. Additional QA duties include the following:  Reporting all QA findings to mammogram supervisor, performing machine inspections, making follow up calls to physician’s offices on all positive cases, and keeping abreast of all regulatory changes.
4. Serves as a patient liaison by assisting patients as they navigate through the numerous follow-up procedures that are occasionally needed with breast imaging.
5. Acquires complete and appropriate patient history and conveys all pertinent information to radiologist.
6. Familiarity with terminology and the procedures performed in all of Diagnostic Imaging.  Demonstrates a working knowledge of all front desk and file room procedures.
7. Communicates delays to patients.  Explains procedures so that patients are comfortable.  Obtains thorough and pertinent patient history and prepares patients for examination.
8. Encourages and assist in research at the technologist level.  Keeps abreast of new procedures and exams as it pertains to area of diagnostic imaging practice.
9. Selects the appropriate equipment and is aware of the set up based on procedure protocol, specifications, and standards.
10. Evaluates the technical quality of images and is able to record, archive, retrieve, compile, and calculate data.
11. Independently capable of assisting the radiologist during invasive procedures such as biopsies and abscess drainages.
12. Positions the patient based on anatomy in question and provides accurate measurements, educates and can clearly explain procedures before imaging, and follows age-specific guidelines.

6. Informs Diagnostic Imaging Management of unusual events or variations in normal business or clinical activities and shares ideas for improvement.
7. Participates in educational and staff meetings.  Attends all department meetings and/or reads minutes.  Participates as assigned with student/new employee education.
8. Performs and/or accepts all other duties as assigned.
9. Performs routine cleaning of work area and associated equipment.  Maintains a complete stock of necessary supplies.
10. Transports and transfers patients in a safe manner and adheres to patient transport policy.  Utilizes proper restraints, side rails, and other associated measures when transporting patients.
11. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities or committees.
12. Adheres to dress code requirements and standards.  Wears identification badge clearly visible at chest level while on duty.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

1. Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in both general radiography and the advanced discipline of mammography as required by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) required.
2. Two year allied health degree preferred.
3. Advanced registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in the advanced discipline of bone densitometry preferred.

EXPERIENCE

1. Ability to perform mammography and bone density imagining procedures associated with area of hire independently and accurately.
2. Two years of experience in a clinical setting as an ARRT Registered Technologist preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES/MOTOR SKILLS

1. Sedentary Work:  Frequently required to stand, kneel and crouch.  On a daily basis may be required to move about, sit, climb stairs and bend.  Is frequently required to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.  May be required to push/pull/carry items between 20-100 lbs.
2. Vision:  Requires the ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye.  Near acuity:  Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.  Midrange Acuity:  Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet.
3. Motor Coordination:  While performing the duties of the job, it is required to regularly perform functions that include using hand and finger movement, handle or feel objects, be able to use tools or equipment that requires reaching with hands and arms.  Must be able to travel independently throughout the hospital; access patients/families including areas confined by space and/or equipment.
4. Speaking/Hearing:  Ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening.
