Description

Under direct supervision, performs various wastewater treatment plant operation and maintenance tasks.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists in the general maintenance and operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment including pumps, valves, electric motors, filters, electrical switchgear, and meters.
  • Collects water and wastewater samples as directed.
  • Loads and unloads supplies and chemicals from trucks, tankers, and other transport containers.
  • Assists operators and mechanics in the cleaning and repair of tanks, basins, reservoirs, and associated equipment.
  • Informs supervisor of all problems, deviations, hazards, unfamiliar situations, and all work activities.
  • Operates various light to heavy construction equipment and tools not to include any that require a CDL.
  • Performs general housekeeping of building interiors, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, hosing, vacuuming, emptying refuse containers, cleaning windows, cleaning countertops and other hard surfaces, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Performs general housekeeping of building exteriors, tanks, and basins including brushing, hosing, and spraying surfaces to remove growth buildup of aquatic vegetation and insect nests.
  • Performs lawn care functions to include mowing, weed trimming, lawn watering, distribution of light herbicides and pesticides, tree trimming, and trash collection at the treatment plant, lift stations, and water pumping stations.
  • Assists with other special projects and tasks as directed.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Assists other coworkers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Must have a valid state-issued drivers license, and the driving record must comply with Town policy.

  • Must be able to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow oral and written directives.
  • Must also have good hand-eye and foot coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activities to include, exerting up to 100 lbs. of pressure, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy supplies and equipment several times a day; able to shovel, crawl, bend, kneel, and dig holes for several hours per day; climb on and off equipment; and operate vibrating equipment.
  • Must be able to work indoors, underground, and outdoors, including in confined spaces such as pipes, culverts, manholes, and trenches. Must also be able to work on various terrains-level, slippery, sloping, unstable, or muddy-and under constant noise.
  • Must tolerate adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather (rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure), mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes, odors, dust/mist, chemical and toxic waste, and exposure to insects, noxious plants, and snakes.

  • Related utility operation, equipment operation, or plant operation experience is preferred.

Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities

  • Skills in operating heavy to light construction equipment and in using small power tools and equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Must be able to maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with employees, contractors, and the general public.
  • Must be able to work extensive hours, or various work shifts as needed.
