The Public Works Department and Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department are actively seeking Maintenance Worker II.

This is service maintenance work in performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of public works projects, public parks grounds, athletic fields, and associated right-of-way/public property maintenance duties, including operating light construction equipment. Work requires knowledge of public works construction practices and procedures, maintenance of public parks grounds and associated guidelines, work instructions, routines and procedures used, which can be learned on the job within several months. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is performed following established routines, procedures and standing instructions, and is patterned, involving similar situations, and generally requiring only the choice of the correct procedure. Work is performed outdoors where there are some risks and hazards associated with operating machinery and vehicles on or near the roadway. Operates motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,000 pounds or more, light construction equipment and machinery, and utilizes hand tools. Physical demands consist of working in adverse weather conditions, heavy physical exertion, and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Work is performed under immediate supervision where work assignments are covered by established procedures from which deviation is not permitted.

Examples of Work

  • Performs semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of public works projects, public parks grounds, athletic fields and associated right-of-way/public property maintenance duties.
  • Operates mowers, edgers, weed eaters, sprayers, chain saws, concrete saws, pumps, patching machines, tamping devices, pitchforks, trowels, shovels, and other simple machines and equipment.
  • Performs landscape installation tasks such as grading, leveling and installation of retention walls.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains sidewalks, curb and gutter and fences which will include backstops, cleans out drainage lines, manholes and catch basins.
  • Operates motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,000 pounds or more including dump trucks, asphalt spreaders, tractors, backhoes, front end loaders, weed machines, street sweepers and heavy rollers.
  • Operates and makes minor repairs to various small equipment such as portable rod motors, rodding machines, winches, gasoline powered tamps, pavement breakers, pipe saws, pneumatic powered tamps, grinders, manual pipe cutters, chainsaws, mowers, weed eaters, edgers and trimmers.
  • Provides input to Crew Leader in making estimates of materials needed for the job.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the tools and procedures used in the installation, maintenance and construction of public works, public parks grounds, athletic fields, landscape projects.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skill in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks and light construction equipment.
  • Ability to operate mowers, edgers, weed eaters, sprayers, chain saws, concrete saws, pumps, patching machines, tamping devices, pitchforks, trowels, shovels, and other simple machines and equipment.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled construction tasks under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,000 pounds or more, including dump trucks, asphalt spreaders, tractors, backhoes, front end loaders, weed machines, street sweepers and heavy rollers.
  • Ability to check operating and safety conditions of vehicles and perform minor servicing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift and move supplies and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Six months of previous work experience in general maintenance or construction is preferred.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • A valid class B or higher commercial drivers license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Registration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Clearinghouse is required prior to appointment.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
