The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform semi-skilled and manual maintenance duties required to preserve and maintain the Town’s sanitary sewer collection system infrastructure. Responsibilities include cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining sewer mains, laterals, manholes, and related appurtenances to ensure reliable conveyance of wastewater and protection of public health and the environment.
Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Work environment includes exposure to noise, dust, traffic, wastewater, hazardous gases, confined spaces, excavation hazards, and underground utilities, with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects, and operating equipment.
This position is considered essential personnel and requires participation in emergency response activities, including significant overtime, after-hours callouts, weekend work and extended shifts to respond to both sanitary sewer emergencies and water distribution emergencies such as water main breaks as well as snow emergencies.
This job may prepare an incumbent for career progression by gaining additional, more complex skills in sewer collection system maintenance and operation.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences while coordinating with supervisors and team members to complete assigned tasks.

Cleans and maintains sanitary sewer mains and laterals using high-velocity jetting equipment, mechanical cleaning equipment, and other specialized tools.
Responds to sewer system emergencies, including sewer backups, blockages, pump station alarms, and sanitary sewer overflows, and is required to work significant overtime, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts, to restore service and protect public health and the environment.
Performs inspection and maintenance of manholes, sewer mains, and related infrastructure; assists with identifying defects, blockages, infiltration, and structural issues.
Assists with the repair and replacement of sewer mains, laterals, and manholes, including excavation, pipe installation, and restoration of disturbed areas.
Operates combination sewer cleaning trucks (jet/vac), vacuum equipment, pumps, and other specialized equipment used in sewer system maintenance and emergency response.
Deploys and maintains traffic control devices and is exposed to traffic conditions while working in or near roadways.
Performs confined space entry into manholes and other sewer structures using required personal protective equipment and monitoring equipment, in accordance with Virginia and OSHA standards.
Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on sewer system components, including manholes, frames and covers, cleanouts, and related structures.
Assists with locating sewer infrastructure using maps, records, and electronic locating equipment; assists in marking utilities prior to excavation activities.
Restores work sites following maintenance and repair activities by backfilling trenches, compacting soil, placing temporary or permanent pavement patches, and restoring disturbed surfaces.
Maintains vehicles, equipment, and tools in safe working condition; performs routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and minor maintenance.
Interprets map documents, diagrams, sketches, technical manuals, and uses associated numbering systems for utility assets; interprets various plan drawings.
Competently uses software and computer tablets for email and record-keeping. Responsible for performing updates; records activity into the Town’s electronic maintenance management system, such as time logs, equipment and materials used for maintenance, repair, or replacement, and the associated utility asset identification.
Interacts and communicates with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, and the general public regarding sewer service issues, work activities, and safety considerations.
This is an essential position among the Town’s workforce and subject to work during inclement weather conditions or other designated emergencies.
Loads and unloads trucks, materials, and equipment.
Flags traffic in work areas for workers and drivers.
Cleans and lubricates work vehicles and equipment.
Assists higher-level staff or supervisors with complex repairs and installations.
Returns to work for sewer system emergencies, snow operations, and other emergency response situations as required.
Performs related work as assigned.
Maintains positive relations with co-workers and customers.
Maintenance Worker I-
Valid State Driver’s LicenseRequires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
Requires three months relevant equipment operation, utility maintenance or closely related experience.
Maintenance Worker II- Valid State Driver’s License
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
Requires one year relevant equipment operation, utility maintenance or closely related experience.
Maintenance Worker III
Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Requires three years large and heavy equipment operation, utility maintenance or other closely related experience, dependent on position recruited.
Valid State Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with N endorsement, or 5 years of documented heavy equipment operator experience for utilities.
Maintenance Worker IV
Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Requires four years large and heavy equipment operation, utility maintenance or other closely related experience, dependent on position recruited.
Requires 2 years document heavy equipment operator experience
Valid State Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with N endorsement
Virginia Class 5 Waterworks License or NAASCO Certification
