Position Summary Information

General Description of Position

Under the general direction and supervision of the Superintendent, Physical Plant, the Maintenance Worker - Grounds is responsible for the care and upkeep of lawns, trees, shrubs, and decorative areas. This part-time position is responsible for the repair and upkeep of grounds equipment, auto pool vehicles, and assisting in other functions relating to the maintenance and operation of the College facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain grounds.
  • Keep the grounds clean from litter and trash.
  • Mow, trim, rake, and irrigate all areas.
  • Trim, prune, and spray trees and shrubs.
  • Plant trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair ground equipment.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of equipment while performing various essential functions of the position; lawn and garden tractors with a mower or blade attachment, sidewalk edgers, mowers with front-mounted mower blades, push mowers, weed eaters, hand sprayers, and a variety of small hand tools.
  • Maintain and fuel vehicles.
  • Wash the exterior and clean the interior of vehicles as needed.

Marginal Functions

  • Clean and straighten the maintenance shop.
  • Assist with the painting of poles, curbs, and parking stripes.
  • Assist with the removal and pouring of concrete, including preparation of the area and operating jackhammers when needed.
  • Assist with building/facilities maintenance and remodeling projects.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, understand, and/or follow instructions related to hazardous materials, fertilizers, and lawn care products.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate power lawn equipment, hand tools, and other equipment as required.
  • Ability to work and communicate with a diverse group of staff, student workers, and the public both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as a productive member of a maintenance team using the established practices, procedures, and policies of the College and directives of the supervisor.
  • Knowledge and ability to use safe lifting and moving techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  • Ability to use basic computer skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Operate riding mower equipment in a seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Able to get on and off riding mower equipment.
  • Stand on feet and walk for an extended period of time, operating push-type mowers and weed eaters.
  • Lift 80 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Carry 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Bend, stoop, or squat to ground level on a repetitive basis.
  • Hand-eye coordination to operate the equipment.
  • Reach overhead on a repetitive basis.
  • Climb on ladders to heights of 12 feet
  • Work outside under extremely hot conditions.
  • Work in areas involving dust, odors, pollen fumes, and gases.
  • Work in areas with noise, some requiring the use of hearing protection.
  • Use of safety glasses and leather boots is required.

The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License and the ability to qualify for auto insurance coverage

Desired Qualifications

  • One (1) year experience in groundskeeping.
  • High school graduate or GED with vocational training or on-the-job training; or
  • AAS degree in a related technical area.

Salary

$15.32/hour

Benefits

Part-time regular employees are eligible to participate in the TIAA retirement plan through a Roth, SRA, or 457(B) account, with no match provided by the College. Additionally, part-time regular employees may enroll in supplemental benefits and the group vision plan through employee-paid premiums.

Schedule

Normal hours of work for this part-time temporary position are generally scheduled by the College, Monday through Friday, based on a 29-hour workweek and a 260-day work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
