Position Summary

The Seasonal Maintenance Technician performs a variety of maintenance and operational duties to support public recreation facilities, wildlife management areas, fishing access sites, and state parks. Responsibilities include fencing repair and construction, vegetation management, grounds maintenance, facility cleaning, and general upkeep of state-owned lands and facilities. This position requires the ability to safely operate small equipment and power tools while working independently and as part of a team in outdoor environments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Construct, repair, and maintain fences on Wildlife Management Areas.
  • Apply herbicides and perform weed control activities in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
  • Mow grass, trim vegetation, and maintain grounds at Fishing Access Sites, Wildlife Management Areas, and State Parks.
  • Operate weed eaters, lawn mowers, chain saws, and other small equipment to maintain facilities and grounds.
  • Clean and maintain public latrines, picnic areas, campgrounds, and other visitor-use facilities.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on buildings, signs, gates, trails, and recreational infrastructure.
  • Assist with campground, park, and fishing access site upkeep, including trash collection and site cleanup.
  • Inspect facilities and grounds for safety hazards and report maintenance needs.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in safe operating condition.
  • Follow all safety procedures, agency policies, and environmental regulations.
  • Provide courteous assistance to park and recreation users when appropriate.
  • Perform other related maintenance duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience performing grounds maintenance, landscaping, construction, agricultural, or general maintenance work is desirable.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver''s license with an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of operating and maintaining small equipment, including lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, backpack sprayers, and hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic groundskeeping and vegetation management practices.
  • Ability to safely apply herbicides and follow pesticide label requirements and safety protocols.
  • Ability to perform manual labor and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and interact professionally with the public.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills are desirable.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, insects, uneven terrain, and other environmental conditions.
  • Position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, kneeling, and operating equipment.
  • Occasional weekend, holiday, or extended-hour work may be required depending on operational needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fence construction and repair.
  • Experience operating tractors, utility vehicles, trailers, or grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Experience with herbicide application or noxious weed management.
  • Experience maintaining parks, recreation sites, agricultural lands, or public facilities.

This position plays a key role in maintaining safe, clean, and enjoyable recreational facilities while supporting wildlife habitat management and public access throughout the state.
