General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, performs lead worker, skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County facilities. Work involves applying drywall, painting, cement work, moving furniture and equipment maintenance and repair. Employee is also responsible for maintaining inventory records. Employee must exercise independent judgment in completing assigned tasks.

This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general county offices are closed. Applicants must be available to work Sunday through Saturday as needed.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform painting, drywall repairs, framing, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, heating/cooling, and masonry/concrete work repairs.
  • Performs facility inspections to prioritize maintenance repairs.
  • May be required to serve on-call as needed
  • Set up and break down conference rooms for meetings, arranging furniture as requested.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the County's personnel policies and procedures manual.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on County owned equipment.
  • Replace and clean filters for HVAC equipment. Operates tractors, lawn mowers and string trimmers to cut grass and trim weeds.
  • Inspects purchased materials for conformity with needs and competitiveness of pricing.
  • Performs skilled carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, and mechanical tasks.
  • Maintains inventory records and ensures the department is supplied with necessary cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares needed reports and daily logs.
  • Determines materials and supplies needed for completion of assigned duties.
  • Prepares records of work completed and time and material spent.
  • Assembles and deliver furniture.
  • Performs snow removal assistance as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent, and two (2) to three (3) years of experience in maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Valid Adult CPR/AED Certification, First Aid Certification.

Must complete FEMA ICS 100 and 700 level courses (or proof of completed courses).

Employee in position is required to wear safety shoes.

Special Requirements

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials and tools used in the construction, maintenance and upkeep of associated facilities.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the work.
  • Knowledge of established policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the department.
  • Knowledge of basic grounds keeping, carpentry, plumbing, and related maintenance trades.
  • Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
  • Knowledge of pump stations, valves and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment, ability to troubleshoot and perform general maintenance.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in the construction and maintenance of facilities .
  • Ability to plan, implement and monitor adherence to a maintenance schedule for facilities equipment.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in performing daily work activities and in inspecting completed work.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain routine work records and reports.
  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with County employees, civic and community groups, and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

  • Ability to use electrical testers to check fuses and breakers.

  • Ability to repair leaks at faucets and under sink.
  • Ability to repair or replace water supply lines and valves.
  • Ability to drain sinks and toilets.
  • Ability to repair metal and wood fencing and gates.
  • Ability to repair or replace bench and bleacher seats and repair bleacher frames.
  • Ability to prepare, prime and paint inside and outside structures.
  • Ability to do roof repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to change locksets, panic bars and door hardware.
  • Ability to assemble office structures and or furniture.
  • Ability to mount bathroom, office equipment, shelves and dispensers.
  • Ability to repair or replace restroom equipment such as; toilets, sinks, partitions exhaust fans etc.
