Under the supervision of the Facilities Director, the apprentice performs unskilled and semi-skilled trades in the maintenance and repair of campus buildings, grounds, and facilities while also attending related college courses to meet the NC apprenticeship requirements. The related training courses will be paid for by the college during program participation and afford the apprentice the opportunity to earn while learning a new trade. This position is compensated on a progressive pay scale with pay increasing over time as successful work and training hours progress.\n \nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\n\n Performs minor repairs to the grounds and maintenance equipment. \n Repairs and maintains plumbing fixtures and other related plumbing repair activities. \n Performs general carpentry and associated woodworking duties. \n Assists with the installation of drywall, doors and door frames, and replacing broken windows. \n Paints a variety of surfaces within the facility. \n Performs small engine and motor repairs including replacement of various parts such as belts, motors, bearings, and replacing burned out motors. \n Arranges rooms and moves furniture to set up for meetings or for changes in room functions. Completes work orders and performs other duties as assigned.\n \nKnowledge, Skills & Abilities\n\n Knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trade skills. \n Knowledge of safety regulations and precautions in the workplace. \n Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. \n Ability to detect broken or worn parts by inspection. \n Ability to plan and organize work and set priorities. \n Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. \n Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. \n Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently.\n \nProfessional Development and College Service \n\n Must be continuously enrolled in related apprenticeship program courses at the college.\n Must complete, or be given credit for, a minimum of 57 credit hours of related instruction within 3 years of beginning of employment. \n Completes a minimum of 8 hours of professional development annually that aligns with annual instructional goals of the College or individual goals as recommended by the dean.\n Attends College and/or administrative meetings.\n Performs other duties as assigned.\n \nCollege-wide Expectations: WCC places a high value on creating an engaged, collaborative campus environment; therefore, employees are required to complete their work hours in person on WCC's campus.
