Position Summary

Perform general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, interior alterations, plastering, and general mechanical repair work. Assist with grounds upkeep and keeping facilities clean.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance in the areas of carpentry, electrical work, lighting, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, plastering, painting, interior alterations, and general mechanical repair work.
  • Duties include but are not limited to: replacing electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors; using plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings; repairing or replacing sinks, water coolers, and toilets; painting structures and equipment; repairing or replacing concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks; replacing damages paneling, ceiling and floor tiles; hanging doors and installing door locks; replacing broken window panels; and performing general maintenance on buildings, equipment and machinery.
  • Move furniture and equipment and load and unload suppliers.
  • Assist in ground upkeep.
  • Assist in keeping facilities clean.
  • Operate forklift.
  • Delivery and/or pickup of supplies as needed.
  • Assist with preparation and facilitation of college events and meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years experience in general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings including but not limited to: carpentry, electrical work, lighting, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, plastering, painting, interior alterations, and general mechanical repair work.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of building techniques and common tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds keeping, and custodial work.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Ability to work well under pressure Knowledge of common tools and equipment used in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds keeping and custodial work.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and state laws regarding accidents and losses of personnel or property.
  • Must have oral and written communications.
  • Able to understand and follow oral or written instructions.

Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
