Under direct supervision, maintains the City's parks, properties and athletic fields working with a variety of power tools and riding equipment, such as loaders, tractors, and mowers. Performs janitorial duties, minor plumbing carpentry, and concrete and paint repairs. Maintains and installs lawns, trees and shrubs. Performs landscape maintenance and maintains equipment. Performs related duties as required. Responsible for regular, on-time attendance.
Essential Job Functions
Responsible for maintaining parks and sports turf areas in a manner conducive to a healthy and aesthetically pleasing turf, utilizing all equipment necessary to complete the task. Removes debris from public grounds. Installs or assists in installing, maintaining and repairing irrigation systems. Performs landscape construction and maintenance, utilizing proper horticultural procedures. Performs related maintenance or construction on special projects as needed.
Operates, maintains and makes minor repairs to ATVs, tractors, self-propelled and riding mowers, skid steer loaders and trucks. Prepares and maintains playgrounds and athletic fields for safe usage. Assists in minor plumbing and electrical repairs. Applies chemicals and fertilizers as instructed. Operates hydro mulcher to water turf, trees and shrubs. Maintains and repairs restrooms, ensuring cleanliness and safety.
Performs the duties of the Parks Crew Leader and assume all responsibilities during his absence, including but not limited to; knowledge in assigned areas such as: ground maintenance, irrigation maintenance, athletic field maintenance and renovation, horticulture, and best turf cultural maintenance practices.
Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or GED required. Must have a minimum of one (1) year of general maintenance experience. Related experience working outdoors in parks maintenance, construction or trades is preferred.
Ability to read traffic signs, warning labels and simple operating instructions. Ability to write work orders for repair of equipment, memos, and complete time sheet. Ability to perform simple math, i.e. completion of time sheet, mix chemicals, adjust fertilizer rates. Initiative and ability to foresee problematic conditions or safety risks in Parks and to take corrective action. Ability to occasionally oversee work quality of Park Maintenance Worker I. Ability to work well with Parks staff as well as other departments.
Other Requirements
Valid drivers license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
Must be able to work overtime and on weekends as needed.
Must possess or obtain within 12 months, at least one (1) licenses/certification from a following list: Class "A" Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator License, Certified Arborist, TCEQ Licensed Irrigator, TCEQ Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License, Certified Playground Safety Inspector License. Any license/certification that is not listed in this section must be pre-approved as a valid substitute by the Department Director.
Must be able to stand and walk on asphalt, gravel, grass, and wet and dry soil. Must be able to handle and operate majority of landscape tools and equipment which includes shovels, rakes, motorized equipment and basic hand tools. Must be able to lift and carry various types of landscape equipment and debris (up to 80 lbs.). This position requires pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, vision, sitting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, climbing, balancing, hearing, talking and foot controls in order to operate equipment and perform essential job duties. Exposed to various weather conditions, including hot, cold, wet, icy, and/or humid situations. Works in or near road traffic and heights. Works with power equipment, mowers, and chainsaws.
