Uses hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve issues in mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic systems. Ensures proper wiring, installation, and repair work comply with applicable codes and regulatory requirements. Conducts inspections, testing, and preventative maintenance to identify hazards and ensure safe, reliable operation of equipment. Documents work performed. Responsibilities increase in complexity, independence, and technical expertise across levels, with higher levels providing advanced diagnostics and mentor-ship. This position may be filled at Level I, II, III , or IV depending on candidate qualifications and department needs. Little to no related experience. Basic mechanical aptitude. Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures **Level II** – Intermediate: High School Diploma or equivalent 1+ year of related experience. Working knowledge of tools and maintenance systems. Basic troubleshooting and ability to follow technical instructions **Level III** – Skilled: High School Diploma or equivalent3+ years of related experience. Strong troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic systems. Ability to read blueprints and technical documents. Works independently. May guide junior staff **Level IV** – Highly Skilled: High School Diploma or equivalent (trade/technical training preferred)5+ years of progressive experience. Advanced diagnostics and complex repair expertise. Knowledge of codes, regulations, and compliance standards. Final level placement will be based on experience, skills, and internal equity considerations. **Minimum Qualifications** **EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT :** 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience). **Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:** **Maintenance Mechanic, I:** Requires little to no related experience. **Maintenance Mechanic, II:** Requires at least 1 year of related experience. **Maintenance Mechanic, III :** Requires 3+ years of related experience. **Maintenance Mechanic, IV:** Requires 5+ years of related experience. **Preferences** 1. Technical or vocational training in mechanical, electrical, HVAC , or related field 2. Experience with building systems ( HVAC , electrical distribution, boilers, controls, etc.) 3. Experience using computerized maintenance management systems ( CMMS ) 4. Familiarity with building automation systems ( BAS ) 5.
