Position Summary:

The incumbent serves as Maintenance Staff for Madison County Community Corrections facilities, responsible for overseeing and performing a wide range of mechanical maintenance and custodial functions to ensure the safe, secure, and efficient operation of both facilities. This position plays a critical role in maintaining facility infrastructure, supporting operational readiness, and ensuring a clean, sanitary, and professional environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and perform routine and complex maintenance, repair, and custodial duties for modern correctional facilities as directed by facility Supervisors and/or the Executive or Assistant Director.
  • Demonstrate strong initiative by proactively identifying facility needs, prioritizing tasks, and implementing timely solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance practices to reduce equipment failure, extend the life of facility systems, and minimize operational disruptions and costly repairs.
  • Oversee the overall cleanliness and sanitation of both facilities, ensuring all areas meet agency standards. Promptly address cleanliness concerns and maintenance issues to maintain a safe, orderly, and professional environment.
  • Maintain and repair electrical security systems, including detention door panels, switches, relays, lighting fixtures, and related components. Diagnose electrical issues such as shorts or system failures and perform necessary adjustments and repairs.
  • Perform routine maintenance on detention systems, including lubrication of components using appropriate nonconductive materials.
  • Maintain and repair commercial kitchen and laundry equipment, including washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers.
  • Perform plumbing maintenance and repairs, including sinks, toilets, water valves, unclogging drains, pipe replacement, and servicing water softening systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintain logs of daily work assignments, preventive maintenance activities, required documentation, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Report malfunctions or concerns to Supervisors/Directors.
  • Monitor, test, and maintain fire safety systems, including smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and related equipment. Maintain accurate records for compliance with the State Fire Marshal.
  • Inspect and maintain emergency generators, ensuring proper voltage, frequency, and amperage output; adjust as necessary.
  • Repair and replace electrical fixtures such as outlets, switches, faceplates, and conduit as needed.
  • Perform basic landscaping duties as required to maintain facility grounds.
  • Oversee facility chemical systems, ensuring proper handling, storage, and documentation in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors, including obtaining quotes, researching products/services, and monitoring contracted work to ensure quality and compliance. Report any deficiencies or concerns.
  • Serve as the point of contact for workplace safety concerns, ensuring hazards are promptly addressed, corrected, and monitored in accordance with facility standards.
  • Maintain agency vehicles, including routine servicing, minor repairs, inspections, and fueling.
  • Oversee floor care for both facilities, including stripping, waxing, buffing, and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and appearance.
  • Develop and maintain policies, inspection tools, logs, and documentation as necessary to support maintenance and safety operations.
  • Order, track, and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, sanitation products, chemicals, and repair parts.
  • Perform painting, touch-up work, and minor facility improvements. May supervise and direct participant workers in completing assigned maintenance or custodial tasks.
  • Work effectively in a correctional environment, including appropriate interaction with justice-involved individuals/participants.
  • Utilize knowledge of multiple trades and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer manuals to complete repairs.
  • Safely operate a variety of tools, equipment, and diagnostic instruments to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Train, direct, and provide guidance to staff and/or participants as appropriate.
  • Independently identify maintenance issues, take corrective action, and communicate effectively with supervisors and leadership regarding facility needs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance practices across multiple trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, general repair).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and perform duties independently.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with staff, vendors, and contractors.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Job Requirements (Summary):

  • Ability to meet all Community Corrections hiring and retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others in the workplace.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply facility policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Ability to follow and execute written and verbal directives.
  • Proficiency in the use of assigned equipment, including computers, printers, intercom systems, tools, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position, including prolonged standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
  • You must successfully complete and maintain all required training and certifications.
  • Ability to work irregular and/or extended hours as needed.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
