Beacon Breaks Ground on New Memorial Hospital Patient Tower
In October 2022, Beacon Health System leaders broke ground on the new 10-story patient care tower on the campus of Memorial Hospital of South Bend. This transformational, once-in-a-generation project is designed to enrich the patient, family and visitor experience while meeting the growing healthcare needs of residents in our area for decades to come.

Summary
Under the supervision of the Facilities Director, performs a variety of preventive maintenance task on hospital facilities and equipment. Makes repairs to electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, performs carpentry tasks, and maintains and repairs various equipment. Assists with major repairs and construction projects. Repairs and maintains machinery and patient equipment in all hospital facilities.
Responsibilities:
Creates and maintains an atmosphere of courtesy, dignity, respect, and professionalism by following the specific requirements below when dealing with patients, family members, physicians, co-workers and community members:
o Treats every individual with courtesy, honesty, and respect.
o Empathizes with those served and worked with.
o Presents a positive first impression.
o Maintains and displays a positive attitude at all times.
o Escorts customers to their destination rather than pointing and giving directions.
o Respects everyone''s privacy and confidentiality.
o Discusses personal or work issues in private.
o Answers phones professionally.
o Maintains clean and attractive facilities (picks up trash, reports problems, etc.).
o Invokes ''Service Recovery'' when warranted.
Complies with all regulatory, federal, state, and local laws, and the organization''s compliance plan and code of ethics.
Complies with organizational policies and procedures, including fire, safety and infection control.
Works toward and contributes to a culture of continuous performance improvement, risk management and patient safety.
Tests electrical circuits to locate problems. Replaces outlets, ballasts and light switches. Assists with major electrical repairs.
Performs minor plumbing repairs such as repairing leaks, unplugging drains, and replacing valves. Installs new plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, drinking fountains, and assist with major plumbing projects.
Performs a variety of carpentry tasks such as framing and finishing drywall, installing door frames and hanging doors, building walls and partitions, and constructing storage and shelving units. Assists with major construction projects. Installs modular work stations.
Inspects and monitors the operation of heating and air conditioning units, checking filters, trouble shooting problems, cleaning evaporators and condenser cells, changing belts and motors, lubricating bearings and monitoring the operation of air handler units. Monitors and adjust computerized heating and air conditioning system.
Performs masonry work such as repairing sidewalks and steps, and patches holes in asphalt.
Performs roof repairs such as patching, replacing flashing, and related repairs.
Repairs carpet, tiles and other floor coverings. Grouts and seals tiles and installs floor molding.
Performs interior and exterior painting, includes repairing and preparing walls for painting and applying various types of paint. May require use of ladders and scaffolding.
Performs repairs on stretchers and beds.
Performs snow removal duties when needed to promote a safe environment for visitors, patients, and staff.
Responds to emergencies, fire, Dr. Strong, Mr. Ready disaster calls, etc., when needed.
Operates tractors with mowers, riding mowers and power mowers to cut grass on the hospital property. Trims grass, trees, shrubs, and hedges with power and hand equipment. Operates power edger for sidewalks. Operates tractors with snow attachments and snow blowers to remove snow from pedestrian and traffic areas and pe+I13rforms other grounds task when needed.
Performs related duties when assigned.
LIC Drivers License Required: Y Preferred: N, High School Diploma, or GED equivalent, required. Training in electrical, plumbing and other building trade areas preferred. EDUCATION Diploma Required: N Preferred: N
