Description

Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission

Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic 1

Location: Hoqiuam, WA

Close: July 30th, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

Position Status: This is a non-permanent position. The expected duration of this position is 5 months from the time the employee starts.

Under the supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Mechanic 1 independently performs a variety of responsibilities that include general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties. This position will utilize a working knowledge of several related skills, such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, and machinist work. This position will also install, repair, inspect, and maintain physical facilities (i.e., buildings, facilities, and grounds), machinery, and equipment within the Northern Shores Park Area.

This position is not eligible to telework, as physical on-site presence is required to perform essential functions.

The Northern Shores Area is based out of Ocean City State Park, located just north of Ocean Shores, WA. Our area includes two beachfront camping parks, several beach access roads with facilities, miles of beach accessible by vehicle, as well as two additional camping parks in an inland forest setting. The Maintenance Mechanic 1 works as part of the operations team to maintain and improve these facilities.

We are looking for a team-oriented person who can work well with others as well as work independently. If you enjoy our state parks and would like to improve them, I encourage you to apply!

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs general work in maintenance, repair, remodel, and alteration in construction and maintenance of area facilities, ground, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to park buildings and other park facilities.
  • Maintains and repairs irrigation, plumbing, and sewage systems with the ability to provide minor electrical repairs.
  • Coordinates with management, other employees, region crews, and other area maintenance crews during maintenance and repair projects.
  • Maintains health and safety standards.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.

AND

  • Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) drivers license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in State Parks or similar parks and recreation entity.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Regulatory Compliance and Safety

  • A strong understanding and commitment to meeting health and safety standards, as well as building and permit codes, ensuring all work is performed correctly and safely.
  • Having a "safety-first" mindset-someone who instinctively uses PPE, follows OSHA/state protocols, and understands the risks of working on sewage and electrical systems.

Attention to Detail

  • The commitment to high-quality workmanship, including meticulous record-keeping, precise measurement, and careful execution of all maintenance and repair tasks.

Physical Dexterity and Stamina

  • The physical capability to perform demanding manual labor across a variety of tasks and environments, including the ability to work safely.

Multi-Disciplinary Trades Proficiency

  • Working knowledge of specific skilled trades. Must be able to demonstrate competence in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry to independently maintain park infrastructure like recreation units and shower meters.

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

  • The ability to follow a schedule, diagnose wear and tear before it becomes a failure, and perform routine servicing on vehicles and equipment to extend their lifespan.

Resourcefulness & Independent Execution

  • Must be a self-starter. Needs the judgment to troubleshoot infrastructure issues and solve problems on-site without needing a supervisor to green-light every minor repair.

The ability to take action to learn and grow

  • Increasing and developing knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Adapting to change and applying new approaches.
  • Taking responsibility for learning and adapting, rather than relying on others to fill gaps.
  • Considering and incorporating new information and different perspectives.
  • Practicing self-awareness by reflecting on personal strengths, growth areas, and biases.

Take Action to Meet the needs of Others

  • Increasing access, opportunities, and positive outcomes for others.
