Medical Assistant – Correctional Healthcare

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of healthcare services within a correctional setting. Working under the supervision of licensed nurses and healthcare providers, the MA provides both clinical and administrative assistance to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care for an incarcerated population. This position requires strong clinical skills, professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to thrive in a structured, security-focused environment while maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Assist healthcare providers with examinations, treatments, and minor procedures.

  • Obtain and accurately document vital signs, medical histories, and patient health information.

  • Prepare examination and treatment areas to ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.

  • Perform specimen collection, point-of-care testing, and other approved clinical procedures within scope of practice.

  • Administer medications and treatments as authorized by state regulations, facility policies, and provider orders.

  • Support intake screenings, health assessments, chronic care clinics, and follow-up appointments.

  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and assist healthcare staff during urgent situations.

Administrative Support

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient records using electronic and/or paper health record systems.

  • Schedule patient appointments and coordinate healthcare services as directed.

  • Monitor inventory levels and maintain adequate supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals.

  • Ensure documentation complies with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation standards.

Security and Collaboration

  • Adhere to all facility security policies, procedures, and operational protocols.

  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and applicable regulations.

  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, correctional staff, and other interdisciplinary team members.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support healthcare operations and patient care services.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

  • Current Medical Assistant certification or registration, as required by state regulations.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant.

  • Able to undergo and pass a background check.

  • Must be up to date on vaccinations or willing to get booster(s).

Preferred

  • Experience in correctional healthcare, behavioral health, public health, community health, or other underserved healthcare settings.

  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR) systems.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and infection prevention practices.

  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with diverse patient populations.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to remain calm, composed, and professional during emergencies or high-stress situations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care while maintaining safety and security awareness.
