The Lunchroom/Recess Supervisor & Health Aide fulfills a structured, dual-responsibility role designed to maintain student safety, well-being, and health support during the core midday hours of the school day. This part-time school-year position consists of a daily 5.5-hour shift split into two distinct operational components:

  • Midday Student Supervision (3 Hours): The first part of the shift is dedicated entirely to active supervision in the school lunchroom and/or playground. The aide works to create a safe, orderly, respectful, and positive environment, assisting students and managing adolescent/young learner behaviors dynamically.
  • Health Room Services (2.5 Hours): The remainder of the shift transitions into the health office, providing basic clinical health services and administrative support under the clinical direction of the School Nurse. The aide assists with first aid, medication distribution, health screenings, and medical record management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties as assigned):

  • Lunchroom & Recess Supervision Duties (3.0 Hours Daily)

  • Supervise students in the lunchroom and/or playground to ensure a safe, orderly, and respectful environment.

  • Monitor student behavior actively, intervene proactively when necessary, and consistently enforce school rules and safety procedures.

  • Assist students as needed during lunchtime, including helping with food trays, opening packages, and navigating the cafeteria safely.

  • Facilitate positive social interactions and encourage respectful behavior among students of varying abilities.

  • Maintain and organize playground equipment to ensure a hazard-free recreational space.

  • Interact with students to form positive, supportive relationships while understanding how adolescent/young learners grow.

  • Report student behavioral incidents, safety infractions, or physical injuries promptly to school administration or appropriate staff.

  • Assist with the cleanup of lunch areas, including wiping tables and maintaining overall environmental cleanliness.

  • Health Room & Clinical Support Duties (2.5 Hours Daily)

  • Administer first aid to students and staff for minor injuries and illnesses according to established DPI and MAPS protocols.

  • Monitor students for signs of illness, manage the health isolation space, and follow established district procedures for sending sick students home.

  • Dispense medications accurately according to strict district policies, physician instructions, and documented parental consents.

  • Provide direct care and assist students with chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma, severe allergies) by following established Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) under the supervision of the School Nurse.

  • Supervise and manage specialized diabetic care, including carbohydrate counting, blood glucose monitoring, insulin injections, and insulin pump oversight.

  • Keep accurate, highly confidential student health records, update electronic medical files, and document all health office visits.

  • Track and ensure student compliance with state immunization requirements and assist with school-wide vision, hearing, or other health screenings.

  • Maintain a sanitary, organized, and properly stocked health office.

  • Universal & District-Wide Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively, professionally, and confidentially with parents/guardians, school staff, and the District Nurse regarding student health, behavior, or safety needs.

  • Act as an active participant in building-level HEAT teams and respond rapidly to emergency situations anywhere on campus.

  • Cover the main school secretary''s lunch and break periods if operationally required by administration.

  • Attend required district professional development days and safety trainings as requested.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously around indoor cafeterias and outdoor playground surfaces for an extended 3-hour supervision block. Sufficient physical agility to respond quickly to student conflicts, physical dangers, or medical emergencies.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move lunch trays, supplies, or playground equipment up to 25 pounds. Ability to lift and assist students (up to 50 lbs.) who may require support with physical mobility or medical equipment.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, squat, stoop, and reach as needed during supervision, environmental clean-up tasks, or when administering first aid and healthcare.
  • Sufficient visual and auditory acuity to dynamically monitor large groups of students and accurately assess student health conditions. Fine motor skills to administer medications, perform first aid, and operate specialized medical devices or digital platforms.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and objective in high-stress emergency environments, providing compassionate care to students in distress.
