This position is located at the LA School for the Visually Impaired.
The Louisiana Special School District is an educational service agency that includes the Louisiana Special Schools (Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired) and Special School Programs.
Elementary School teachers at the Louisiana Special Schools are specialized educators responsible for adapting the core curriculum providing direct instruction in unique compensatory skills, and collaborating with a support team to ensure students reach their full academic, social and emotional potential.
This position is applicable to all elementary school teachersat the Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.

Physical Activity Level
Some work is performed in physically comfortable positions with little or light physical effort, and some work requires moderate effort. Minimum Qualifications
Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate
Holds a current Louisiana teaching certificate.
Valid Out-of-State Teaching Certificate
Holds a current teaching certificate from another state.
Alternative Certification Candidate
Holds a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; and Has documented enrollment in an approved alternative teacher prep program.
Job Specification
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction and Curriculum Development:
Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's specific need and goals.
Adapt the general education curriculum and modify instructional materials and classroom environments to ensure accessibility.
Provide instruction and specialized skills to compensate for hard of hearing, sensory loss and visual impairment.
For the visually impaired: Braille reading and writing, use of low-vision devices and assistive technology, orientation and mobility (O&M), listening skills, and daily living skills.
For the deaf/hard of hearing: American Sign Language (AASL) and/or other communication methods (e.g., lip reading, auditory training), use and maintenance of hearing equipment (hearing aids, cochlear implants), and social interaction skills.
Assessment and Evaluation:
Conduct specialized assessments (e.g., functional vision assessments, learning media assessments) to determine student needs and eligibility for services.
Monitor and track student progress on an ongoing basis using data, adjusting teaching strategies and interventions as needed.
Interpret medical reports (ophthalmology/audiology) and translate findings into educational strategies.
Collaboration and Support:
Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team, including other teachers, specialist, therapists, paraprofessionals and administrators to provide comprehensive support.
Communicate regularly with parents and families to discuss student progress and provide information and training on resources and strategies for home support.
Provide training and consultation to general education staff on appropriate accommodations, instructional techniques, and the unique needs of students with sensory impairments.
Act as a liaison between the school, community, and external agencies to ensure access to all available services and resources.
Classroom Management and Environment:
Create a positive, inclusive, safe and supportive classroom culture that fosters self-esteem, self-determination, and independence.
Manage student behavior using positive behavior support systems and restorative approaches.
Ensure the classroom environment is optimized for student access, including appropriate lighting and organization of materials and equipment.
Establish and enforce clear rules and policies for student behavior.
Qualifications
For All Teacher Positions:
Valid teaching certificate, as set forth in Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel (Bulletin 746).
Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience.
Strong knowledge in content area, demonstrated through lesson planning, execution, and intervention with all students.
Effective rating measured using the LEADS or Compass observation and goal setting cycle and tools, which includes measures of setting instructional outcomes, managing classroom procedures, questioning and discussion techniques, engaging students in learning, using assessment in instruction, and measurable student learning targets.
For a Louisiana School for the Deaf Teacher:
Certification as a teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, preferred (3 years to achieve)
Sign Language Proficiency - Advanced level, preferred (2 years to achieve)
For a Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired Teacher:
Certification as a teacher of the Visually Impaired, (3 years to achieve)
Demonstration of Braille proficiency with passing score on the National Certification Unified English Braille (NCUEB), (3 years to achieve).
